Came home from work one night and parked the Miata. Got up the next morning early and went out to do stuff. Ended up having to go into work late in the afternoon. Came home from work that night and parked this...

I absolutely love the Abarth, I just couldn't ever justify spending that type of money and not buy a BRZ/FRS.

Some local guy has a straight piped Abarth.

Well, what are your impressions?

So far so good. Firm yet smooth, quiet ride, great exhaust note with the occasional "pop", only 82 miles on the clock, excellent low end torque and pull through the gears. But the best thing is the ice cold a/c! Oh yeah, and the fact that I can hear myself think!

Miata was too big, huh?

Funny you should say that. The Abarth actually has more leg room up front, but those back seats are damn near useless. I consider it a 2-seater. I'm definitely not going to let the kids go climbing back there. That's why we have the Cube!

Ever since late 2012, all Abarth's are straight piped from the factory. And I test drove a BRZ. Quite frankly, for the money, the Abarth is a lot more car. Better feel, better build quality, better fit and finish. Just my observation. I do wish the Fiat seats got me a little lower though, but I can live with that. And yes, the BRZ has 200hp, but also only 150 ft lbs of torque that comes in much much later, and it's 200+ lbs heavier. On top of that, I only paid a little over $20k out the door.

Neat car, but U left $ on the table. I got a friend in OKC, who got her '13 Abarth in Dallas, for $17K OTD.

Still, enjoy!

I'm not complaining, and I'm enjoying.

Also, I can't see how she got a '13 for $17k unless it was either used, a program/demo car with some mileage on it, she had a really good trade-in, or she put down $3k - $4k or a combination of some good cash down + good trade-in. If it's the fully loaded one like mine, that's a $27k car. They're not going to give it away for over $10k less. Anyway...

Jess (xceler8n) got one recently, too. It's her dd. Neat little cars! The privateer Abarth team rolled theirs at T25 in '12 during qualifying, but were able to make repairs and start the race. They have a neat video from in the car. A lot of our team saw it roll from the pits.

By "straight piped", I meansinde straight pipe running from the turbo out the back of the car. No cats, resonators, mufflers, etc. The Abarth doesn't have mufflers from the factory.

I don't mean to belittle the Abarths greatness, or anything like that. I love the car, and considered buying a Fiat 500 sport for a short period of time. I just couldn't choose a fwd car over a proper front engine rwd car. That is my own personal preference. I don't feel you made a wrong decision, or even a right decision. I feel you made your decision. I'd love to own an Abarth or a BRZ/FRS. Both awesome cars.

Did you trade the BRG? Sell to someone local? You had some real nice mods going on that car.

If I had never gone to check out the Fiat, I would probably not have anything somewhat negative to say about the BRZ, and for all practical purposes, it's a well balanced, nimble car. I have to say though, the power delivery of that little flat four kind of reminds me of an n/a rotary motor. It's smooth but doesn't come alive until about 5k rpm, more than double that of the Abarth motor.

Granted, I'll miss not being able to kick it sideways going around a corner, but that's about it. I've never been into drifting so really have no need for the ass end coming around whenever I want. With that said, the same way you control a RWD around a corner with the throttle, I can do pretty much the same thing with FWD. I just have to remember to turn the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) completely off. It has two stages of control.

BTW, I was driving my brother's Abarth today and we turned the ECS totally off. From a standing start, I got rolling in 1st then gave it the beans. We got to 75mph awfully fast, and that was shifting at 5k rpm! It certainly makes a difference!

Yep, traded it. And yes, I had dumped some major $$$ into it in the past few months in interior mods, new Dunlop ZII tires and a couple other little things. But on the flip side, it was starting to nickle and dime me on other things, a lot more costly things and I just didn't want to deal with that whenever something decided to act up or stop working.

A little update.

Neither my brother or I have made our first payments yet on our Abarths, and we already have one mod done. Again, he got his because he liked mine, the intake that is. The great thing about a turbo car, an intake actually makes a noticeable improvement! This one dynos an extra 11 hp and 9 ft lbs consistent across the power band, from 2500 rpm (full boost) clear to redline. It also makes a great noise that matches well with the exhaust!

In case you were wondering what an extra 40 hp and 70 ft lbs of torque look like for a Fiat 500 Abarth, this is it. It will be here early next week, and I'll be installing it on my next day off.

Why are you suspicious of plug-in power? It's a turbo powered car, so all it does really is modify air/fuel across the power band and raise boost up from 18 psi stock to 24 psi. Dyno proven, reliable, safe power with hundreds of tuning hours and hundreds of thousands of miles behind it. Best part, it only cost $700. Compare that to a true JDM header for a Miata, good for an extra 5 - 10 hp at most at a cost of $1200+. I know, I was thinking of getting one for my old BRG.

Speaking of my old BRG, there's a guy in town who owns it now! My friend saw it yesterday at the Win-Dixie right down the street from us!
