Good component speakers in the doors, a sub-woofer and amp in the trunk. Here is the budget tube style sub-woofer in my former '92:

The spare tire was removed and the amp was secured in front of the base tube towards the cabin.

My 93 installation is pending but the set-up will be similar. Components in the doors, sub and amp in the trunk. The sub will be in a box in the driver's side fender well like this:

The amp placement hasn't been determined yet. It could end up in the cabin behind a seat or under a seat but will most likely be in the trunk somewhere.

Having enough power to drive your door speakers is key. Our little cars are not the best platform for audio but my budget set-up in my '92 was pretty good and a vast improvement over stock.

I've been waiting for someone to try one of these out and report back:

^ I made one of those myself out of the stock parcel deck, except it holds 8" subs.

I have 8" speakers in the door which provide the amount of bass I want, but I'd be interested in seeing/hearing that setup sometime Chris.

This looks exactly like the panel that Clearwater Speakers used to make for the miata back in the mid-1990's

I wanted one, but not compatible with roll bars... deal killer

I fitted my Clearwater shelf (which this looks like a copy of) with my roll bar but it was very close and required modding.

I run Clearwater 8" door units (tweeters are separate), Alpine HU, but don't use the HU to power anything. I have a Alpine PDX-4.100 bridged into 2-channel, so a clean 200WPC, and it flat out rocks. Digital amp, so it runs fairly cool, as well.

I'm a bit of an audio nut; I built my home audio speakers from some fairly esoteric drivers, and good sound is important to me. In a Miata, you're not going to get around the noise, even with good MLV and other treatments, but having done those, too, I can say they make a noticeable difference. A good pair of speakers, a solid amp, and some treatment to reduce ambient noises will do wonders for your car audio.

Especially on the doors and trunk.

It rattles a bit, but I didn't put down any mass on the package shelf, which I should do. But you're more than welcome to check it out when we're at the same place again.

Any modifications need to be done to fit 8" speakers in the door of a '92?
Also, what speakers did you guys go with?

So when you say 8" in the doors, that's really a woofer and since there's hardly any clearance there, that's why folks install 6.5" coax or separates there along with an adapter plate. If you truly need an 8"-10" sub, it's better off boxed in the trunk, IMO.
