So I guess I can make a build thread for my other Miata as well... I got it on Semptember 6th 2008 from nearby car dealer. It was advertised as in top condition, strong engine etc... well the reality was quite different, but I found that out later. And what got me into Miatas? Coincidence... I had some money saved for a car and was searching through ads when I saw this one and fell in love with it.

This is what it looked like when I first got it... it had Alessio F1 17x7,5 +40 with bold Goodyear eagle F1, shitty steeering wheel, shitty chrome accents in&out and Honda CBR silencer...

http://i37.tinypic.com/35m2ogk.jpg

http://i37.tinypic.com/2ljpytj.jpg

winter came early that year and so I changed the 17" to steelies, yeah with wheel covers lol... but they actually weighed less than the Alessios
http://i34.tinypic.com/ig9mdc.jpg

http://i43.tinypic.com/35mljr4.jpg

Next step were OEM 16" wheels, blacked out headlights...
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/georgeCZ/P8011908.jpg

and OEM trunk lip
http://i41.tinypic.com/2q8vz0n.jpg

Then I got a totaled 2003 Shinsen FL for spare parts sometimes in June 2009... I used many things from it on my car, since I had torn top, cracked center console and dash and filthy carpets. I've also used the OEM tower brace
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/georgeCZ/P6101140.jpg

two months later, I got my first NA and the NB got on backburner...
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/georgeCZ/P8242459.jpg

the engine was burning oil and coolant so I started a tear down in April 2010
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/georgeCZ/P405444000.jpg

I've also blocked the EGR during the procesc (somebody aparently messed with it earlier)
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WoeN8fYw3-A/S8d_iY7Y-uI/AAAAAAAAASY/XCm1Ksghqwc/s1600/P4154493.jpg

once i got the interior out, I've found out the drivers floor was cut out and rewelded... this and other things led me to conclusion this cor got in a serious accident at some time... there's a notch in the firewall, rewelded floor, crushed chasis around headlights, the top doesn't fit straight and I can't use HT, because it can't be latched on the window frame...
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/georgeCZ/P6285628.jpg

I've threw out the defunct A/C and some other junk from engine bay and cut/painted the valve cover
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/georgeCZ/P6225503.jpg

I also got a Nardi wheel at the time and was experimenting with seats... Until now, I had two Nardi wheels, one Momo, one Sparco and now I have a noname d-cut wheel. Seat-vise I've gone through Cobra clubman, Recaro profi SPG and Bride leather recliner... and ended with stock seats wit cut foam...
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/georgeCZ/P7075984.jpg

The 16" were sold by the time I finished the engine and I got 15" Work RS-ß and V-MAXXXXXXCXCYCYSCYXCYDWEFC coilovers
http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss253/georgeCZ/mazdacopy.jpg

Then the cur run fine untill the winter of 2010 when I found a coolant leak on the back of the head... so I did a coolant reroute

and bought ULTRA 8mm HT leads
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5064/5631481280_1ac99936f8_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/49634872@N07/5631481280/)

friend of mine bought the works sometimes in spring 2011 and I've rocked steelies most of the time that year. Then I got 15" Eta Beta Lucy wheels... I had them two weeks when one tire blew up and they went up for sale...

I wanted new exhaust, cause I've dumped the CBR one for stock item... and friend of mine was selling his custom exhaust with Apexi N1 muffler... I still have it, but stored in a shed because the custom piece of crap didn't fit and was hitting rear tow hook and subframe braces... so now I¨m back with the OEM (the sitcker is there mostly because paint started flaking)
http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6089/6100382274_e51d1e4886_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/49634872@N07/6100382274/)

And we're closing in to the latest change I made... I threw out the ugly shift knob and made a stainless steel one as well as independent gauge rings since my clear cover was scratched badly... the only other addition was a subframe bracing from the late NBFl models
http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6152/6172328319_72499178cf_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/49634872@N07/6172328319/)

This is how the car sits now... I got OEM 15" wheels for summer and small side skirts along with rear mudflaps and painted both black

George

it had a tip welded to it, so you couldn't see it... here's a shot

So I've finaly got the replacement filter for my autoexe intake! Only bad thing is it interferes with my coolant reroute, but I'll find a solution for this sometimes next week

But on the other hand .. you are saving her and making nicer, it has to appreciated :)

George

thanks... you don't know about many fuck ups this car had from the previous owner... I don't even remember all of them myself

anyway, tried to capture sound of the intake on my cell phone... it sounds better in person!

Always liked this car! It's a shame to find all that hidden damage, but good to see you're breathing some life back into it. :)

George
04-03-2012, 03:30 PM
thanks, I'm trying to bring it back to life, but it's hard since the car still refuses to work properly... I've changed valve cover gasket, put the sealant on all the recomended spots, tighted the bolts in proper order to proper torque and it started leaking two months later... I've changed all the cooling system gaskets as I did a reroute, torqued all the bolts on head properly, sealed all hoses and it started leaking coolant somewhere on the back of the head three months later

Dang, that stinks. I swear sometimes that my car wants to die. It's always little stuff here and there, but it's always shortly after fixing something else. I also need to get a new valve cover gasket. Mine's leaking a bit out the back.

When it rains it pours! You should replace the clutch master cylinder at the same time. As they tend to go around the same time, and it's a cheap assurance. Keep up the good work, it's looking good.

it'll be available for sale as soon as I have all the interior parts for NA/NB ready :)

 I vote, do it! I love 5-spokes on NB's. Are they actually 4x100?

George
04-25-2012, 05:51 PM
4x98... I'd either have them redrilled or use the nuts that let you tighten them even though the PCD's not right... they're called floating nuts (rough translation) and compensate for the 2mm difference

regarding those wheels, not going to happen, I had the seller weigh them and they're 19 pounds a wheel. That's a bit too much for my liking. But I may have another solution

yeah, and I'll probably get a torsen by the end of September and am just about to decide wheter or not to buy friend's 14x6 Weds TC05 for track(can't really beat a 4kg/less than 9lbs wheels)

I like the cut out so far, helps with higher speed acceleration. I have yet to finish it and buy some rubber edging. I'm considering adding two more holes on sides under the lights... you can kinda see what I mean in the shot below

finished the exhintake yesterday and must say it's quite nice! I can feel the difference above 3000 RPM

Went to wash the car after a while and to a local meet in the evening... where some cab driver backed into my car and drove away... luckily I've noticed his license plate so I got in touch with police and know who's done it. I'll have properly painted bumper at last

yeah, I look on the bright side. The bumper didn't sit good even before this. I can repair the bumper myself and use just a fraction of the coverage to have it painted... the rest should be enough to let me buy some nice/lighter wheels

changed oil, valve cover and valve cover bolts yesterday. Also finaly replaced the stock header with the Maxim works piece... and it's leaking somewhere... a weird chirping noise appears above 3000 RPM but only when in gear. The noise can't be heard when I rev it in neutral.

in other new, I've been to the last trackday of this season this weekend... unfortunately it started snowing the night before and the whole day was quite cold with strong wind and snow falling almost all day. Had a blast anyway, but I won't go to track on winter tires any more lol, it was either understeer or oversteer the whole way around.

I should be finaly able to repaint the cracked bumper, skirts and rear spats sometime soon. And I'm playing with an idea for a way to bring some fresh air to the autoexe intake...

and then bit the bullet and got me a supercharger (MP45 from a Mini Cooper S)

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3713/11046538546_3d4d2ec6fc_c.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/49634872@N07/11046538546/)

So now I'm sourcing all the bits I need

-supercharger - check
-bypass valve - check
-mounting kit, inlet, outlet - check
-AEM Wideband - check
-NB8 VVT injectors - check
-Megasquirt, probably Reverant built - to buy

George
04-29-2014, 02:20 AM
I should really come here more often, but between the house reconstruction, work and the lady, there's really not much time.

fited the SC and started working on the inlet as the TR Lane one won't fit on LHD car... if there's anyone who knows of a better way to solve this, let me know

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7252/13969161431_9342e8100f_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/nhpB1T)WP_000084 (https://flic.kr/p/nhpB1T) by GeorgeCZ (https://www.flickr.com/people/49634872@N07/), on Flickr

there's not much space for the second throttle body so I'll have to get creative...

other than that, AEM UEGO is on, MW header is fixed, just needs a thermal wrapping. I've placed an order for MS2 with Reverant, should've been ready week ago but he's waiting for a batch of sensors so the ECU is the last thing that's missing to make it running

Looking good George! As far as the custom intake, it's a shame you couldn't bring it into the cowl. The brake lines are easy to bend (make custom lines), and then you could run the piping into the cowl, and have an air filter inside the nice front cowl, sucking cool fresh air.

George
04-30-2014, 05:21 AM
well I could probably do that but I'm going to use the autoexe CF intake with the charger...

George
05-05-2014, 03:31 PM
and there's also no space to route it to the cowl as I found out yesterday

George
06-25-2014, 07:21 AM
Supercharger instal is finished, sadly I couldn't use the whole AutoExe intake, but the filter alone works just fine. I also placed bid on another intake in Japan so we'll see if I get it and if it will work better.

Hose clamps were changed for different ones since I've been loosing pressure and blowing the silicon elbows off of the charger.

https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/q71/s720x720/10302365_775180809181366_8914091982225712623_n.jpg ?oh=418555350e34b1f4ad281fd4d7df2cf2&oe=53E4C499

I also got me frame rails, but I have yet to enlarge the holes and get better hardware, because it came with weak M6 bolts and I broke 3 of them just on the drivers side without any power used

that's a piece of the friction disc (or rather a cone) used in the Fuji LSD... you can find numerous threads about this and there's also a whole thread about bits you find in this particular differential on MX5OC lol

http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/yaf_postsm357597_Bits-from-diff.aspx

the differential was working and made no noise before it was removed from the vehicle, so I think I should be fine for a while if I remove the broken pieces and change the oil

Btw, how do you like the performance gains from this ITB setup? Any dyno numbers?

it came from a good running car so I didn't question the engine's condition... it's got a leak here and there, but that's all

I like the response the ITBs provide, but it doesn't improve performance that much. But I like it more than the supercharger

Interesting. When I did a '99 head conversion on my original short block I ran into a few problems due to added compression and way more air and fuel flow. I had to quickly get a new (lower mileage) motor. After that all the issues were gone. I'm not familiar with your type of upgrade but just seeing how it ran with your previous motor, that would be my suspicion. Or an air leak somewhere..

I'm rebuilding an old FM Ubercharger for my rig. You think ITBs are a more effective route based on your experience with a supercharger?

it does sound like one, so I'll try spraing it with carb cleaner as someone somewhere suggested...

well the supercharger is nice, but ITBs are more of what I'm looking for. I guess you have to try it yourself and see what suits you the best :)

Yeah that should do the trick for you. Try to keep the spray focused where you want it or spray it sporadically so the overspray doesn't go everywhere, especially with the ITBs sucking in air like they do. It'll just make your engine rev like crazy. Try a smoke test if the spray doesn't work. Good luck!

spraying the engine didn't reveal any vacuum leak. Had a friend have a quick look at it at a track I've been to during the weekend and it seems it's got a blown headgasket... I can't seem to get a break with this car. I'm really loosing motivation to do any further work on it.

decided to go for a drive even though the engine's not fine since I paid the entrance fee and couldn't find anyone to go instead of me. It's fine on dry surface, but understeers like crazy on wet... had to pull the ebrake many times to save me from understeering into the grass

I know the feeling, but keep doing the right things and it'll give you lots of fun in the end (at least that's what I hope it will, haha!), get the headgasket changed.

thanks for the kind words :)

I'll probably send the other engine I have to a nearby shop for a complete GO... I was thinking about stroking it to 1.7 but that would be too much money and I'd be better off with 1.8 swap

decision's been made, I'll go with 1.8

I'm just debating wheter go with non VVT or VVT and disable it since I don't have a way to control it and don't want to spend more money on the VVT controller

This car can now be considered gone... friend's gonna have it as a daily driver.

Engine is still 1.6 but running strong now, no leaks.

And this is the replacement
