View Full Version : NC RDU Enthusiasts Meet: Kinston Edition (07/2014)

I can be reached at (252) 525-0941. In case you are having trouble finding my place or have any questions for tomorrow.

Alright, so I will be hosting a tech day on July 12th, Saturday. Well, sort of. JLBMX5 (James) will be bringing his car to my place for a clutch job and anyone that would like to make the 90 minute or so journey from the RDU area is welcome. I figure 9am to 11pm (or later, if needed) is plenty of time to do most things. But, like I said, James' clutch is the priority.

I have 2 lifts, a 4 post drive on (used for the clutch job) and a 2 post. The 2 post will be 1st come 1st serve. There will also be an open flat stall for what ever. I have an air compressor and my fair share of tools and shop equipment (yet not everything), but if you'd like to bring any tools you feel that you need, please do. If you're wondering if you'll need to bring your own this or that, ask.

We're likely going to get some pizza from one of the national chains if people actually show up.

So, where exactly is this going to be?

305 Darden Drive, Kinston, NC 28504.

The shop is behind my house, way in the back. It has red awnings and is easy to spot. Just drive around the fence on the right (looking from the road) to get back there to it. You'll know you're on the right side from the 7 1/2MPH speed limit sign. It's a gravel entrance with a grass path that is mostly smooth, but it does have some small bumps. I'll have my car parked out front, black NA with matching HT, silver Chaparral wheels, and low pro headlights.

I suggest taking I40E to HWY70E and following that all the way to Kinston. For more detailed directions, google maps. If you need help finding the place, PM me or get on the groupme app.

I think that covers everything. If not, let me know or ask.

P.S.

This will be the 2nd Saturday of the month, which means the local cruise-in will also being going on at about 4pm (maybe later). It's mostly a bunch of American cars, 40's and 50's classics and 60's and 70's muscle cars. But it's a completely laxed thing, much like Cars and Coffee. Friendly people that don't really mind what shows up as long as no one is being an ass.

So, if we're all wrapped up by then there's that to go check out. Some nice cars to be seen. People take classics and muscle cars seriously around here.

Update on the cruise-in.

It has moved from the gas station I mentioned to the Dairy Bar next to the Neuse Sports Shop. This is even closer to my place, only about a mile. The address of it is as follows,

225 E New Bern Rd, Kinston, NC 28504

It runs from 1pm-5pm.

Where is the cruise in being held?

I will need to check on that. The place that they have been having it closed (a gas station with a small parking lot). I don't know if they'll have it in the same place or not. But if they do, it's only a couple miles from my place (no more than 5).

Here is info on the cruise-in. http://www.blacktoprebels.com/events/EventDetails?event.eventId=2963

I have emailed asking about the location. If I don't hear from them in a day or two, I'll make some calls.

I still have to see if I will be able to make it over for this. I definitely want to but I have to get a few things squared away before MATG.

JLBMX5
07-06-2014, 08:28 PM
Yea 90 minutes following you would give someone a headach for sure.

tsingson
07-06-2014, 08:33 PM
So what's the head count anyways right now?

My clutch and flywheel arrived today so I have all parts needed for saturday. I still need to go buy some grease but I can get that stuff at advanced.

Demon I Am
07-07-2014, 02:09 PM
You need a clutch alignment tool?

JLBMX5
07-07-2014, 02:10 PM
Thats the toy in the happymeal Tony

Demon I Am
07-07-2014, 02:26 PM
ok, cool. some kits online don't come with em, and it sucks when you don't realize it until day-of

JLBMX5
07-07-2014, 02:34 PM
Yea even the kit I had purchased before on ebay came with the tool. This one I ordered from flyin miata. It also has one of those plates you install that allows you to start car no clutch pushing. Gonna see if we can figure that out as well.

Well got my transmission and diff oil so I'm ready for jamie's

Also James, hunter got one of those for his miata, he says it's not hard at all.

JLBMX5
07-08-2014, 04:19 PM
Is hunter going to meet as well ?

Golden Stallion
07-08-2014, 04:26 PM
Don't know. He is in new York and hasn't even responded to me when I texted him. He also didn't seem that excited about it when he was reading our groupme when James just ordered his clutch. First thing he told me when we hung out later that day was "you know Kinston is a far drive right"

JLBMX5
07-08-2014, 05:05 PM
Yep its a far drive but its a nice drive as well :) .

JamieH
07-08-2014, 08:04 PM
About 90 minutes/miles is a far drive? I can understand that, but come on out, it's worth it. Here's a sneak peak of my humble shop.

07-08-2014, 08:10 PM
Wow you got alot done in there.

JamieH
07-08-2014, 08:19 PM
Yeah, this little gathering has gotten me to do the cleaning the shop has needed. If I had time I'd fix the Camaro so it'd be out of the way too. I might be able to jump start the Conquest at the least, but I know it's going to be cranky about waking up.

JLBMX5
07-08-2014, 08:31 PM
Looking at shop pics and I dont remember seeing when I was there. We should bring some folding chairs so we have a place to sit when we want.

Golden Stallion
07-08-2014, 08:35 PM
ok thanks for warning us james about that. might try and get some seals and stuff and try and work on that if we can

JLBMX5
07-08-2014, 08:39 PM
Yea if you can order tomorrow morning and request usps 2nd day post you should be able to get it by friday. That link Steven posted is the best place to order what you need.

JLBMX5
07-08-2014, 08:45 PM
And you gonna need some oil and a filter.

JamieH

Does your shop have AC?

It does, but it takes a full day for it to cool the entire shop down, so I rarely ever turn it on when I am out there (and I can be a cheap bastard about some things, heh). It's been so long since I last turned it on I'm not even sure if it still works. Might have to check that before Sat. Who knows, if the stars are aligned we may not have to sweat so much this weekend.

kung fu jesus
07-09-2014, 08:04 AM
As hot as it's been, I knew we would get some sort of local storm pop up, it sort of formed on the NW side and blew through. It was small, but rained hard for about 30 minutes.

Demon I Am

So my 225/45/15 Rivals came in today. Crushed my phone though so I cant take pics. The wheels come in friday an will be ready for sat.

Two questions I have though.
1) I live in Apex and it would be more enjoyable to roll with you guys than solo so where can I meet you?
2) I have an oil leak on the left side of the engine that puddles on the inside of the intake manifold loops. I would like to possibly take it off sat and fix the leak but I dont know what I should bring to replace. Is there anytihng I need to buy ahead of time?

It is a handy mart I can meet whoever at 8 am. Thats one hour from kinston. And its about 30 minutes from raleigh .as far as oil leaks I got no clue.

Left side; driver's side or passenger side? Is it pooling before or after the throttle body?

maybe valve cover gasket?. also i would be willing to meet up with you if we don't meet with james at 8 but i would like to meet with him at 8 if i wake up. should be nice to get to know us, we are very diverse group haha. don't think we have a single member like anyone else

JLBMX5
07-09-2014, 03:41 PM
You two can meet up then meet up with me at 8 then we can all three roll out. .

Golden Stallion
07-09-2014, 04:11 PM
Sounds like we should all meet at the address you posted james, would make more sense than us 2 meeting than meeting with James. Care to chime in Matt

JLBMX5
07-09-2014, 04:25 PM
Sounds cool to me. I just did not see any sence in driving out to raleigh then come back right past my house lol

JLBMX5
07-09-2014, 06:31 PM
I might be wrong and someone else can help me out especially andy since he has become the front seal pro. Does the radiator need to come out to replace seal. I figure it would make it alot easier and if so buy some antifreeze and distilled water.

Golden Stallion
07-09-2014, 06:42 PM
Yeah. At the cars and coffee when we were at tony's, we talked about my leak and Andy said I need to take the radiator out.

JLBMX5
07-09-2014, 06:53 PM
Ok then yes buy the coolant and water as well.

Golden Stallion
07-09-2014, 07:26 PM
How much water do I need?

Demon I Am
07-09-2014, 07:58 PM
buy a gallon of 50/50, and a gallon of distilled, that should be good. Maybe 2 gallons of distilled. I can't remember

Pyr0monk3y
07-09-2014, 08:51 PM
2 gallons so we can do a flush. Jamie, do you have a way of disposing coolant?

JamieH
07-09-2014, 09:22 PM
Yeah, same way of disposing oil, Advance Auto's oil recycling drum. They don't seem to care, don't even keep a record of who dumps what and how much.

Golden Stallion
07-10-2014, 03:14 PM
So 2 gallons of water and a gallon of 50/50. Might go ahead and pick that up today so I don't have to buy anything friday

JLBMX5
07-10-2014, 03:39 PM
Yes. And get oil and filter as well

JamieH
07-10-2014, 04:22 PM
If you forget anything, there is an Advance Auto Parts about a mile from my house. So most things like oil, filters, minor parts, etc., will be a quick trip. I've also turned the A/C unit on in the shop. I'm hoping it's actually blowing cold air. The digital read out for the thermometer wasn't working, hoping that's just the two AA batteries that power it that are most likely dead.

As far as I know, it's going to be the following folks showing up.

JLBMX5 - clutch
Golden Stallion - fluid changes, possibly timing belt/water pump
Crossusn - repair mystery oil leak
Pyr0monk3y possibly later in the day

If there is anyone else that knows they'll be coming, speak up.

JLBMX5
07-10-2014, 04:35 PM
Matt (crossusn) is coming. Says he has an oil leak aroung intake I believe.
Good to know about advanced auto just incase I find a bad transmission seal or something other.

Golden Stallion
07-10-2014, 04:40 PM
just curious, how long does it take you engines to cool down(cool enough to touch longer than 10 seconds).

JLBMX5
07-10-2014, 04:48 PM
Its gonna take alittle bit of cool down time after a almost 2 hour road trip.

Golden Stallion
07-10-2014, 04:49 PM
also, right after i posted, brown truck just left so i have all my seals and gaskets and other stuff. now off to go buy coolant, water, oil, and oil filter. this day is going to end up costing me over 300 between all the stuff Im buying for Saturday. also they say to replace your washers when changing oil, should i get new washers or am I fine with what i have. Kind of want to be done with leaks and don't want to risk anything

Thanks to big help from JamieH it took us 11 1/2 hours to swap out my clutch. I olso changed diff fluid and changed the oil. Our biggest problem was obx header in the way but we got over that hurdle then I needed to go to auto store to get some bolts other than that its done. No more rattle and issue with my old clutch was throw out bearing was froze up. Next up boost :)

JamieH
07-12-2014, 09:01 PM
Only because of that fucking OBX header. We would've shaved at least 3 hours off it it wasn't for that header.

I never got to say this but thank you Jamie for letting me use your garage and tools yesterday. I sadly didn't get to fix anything but I learned a lot more about working on engines than i did before considering the only engine i have done before was valve cover gasket and CAS o-ring. I was so damn tired i didn't even stay with you guys at all to eat and stuff. I swear that drive home was the worst drive i have done. I was so tired that if i closed my eyes to blink, the car would cross lanes. I had to sing along to songs to keep me awake so if you saw me last night, i had music up all the way singing along to it at for 90 minutes :toomuch:. I think my belt is still a little loose but i was so tired the last 2 hours of working, i couldn't do anything right. I would fix one thing and forget another :fp:. I had fun though hanging out with you guys and will do it again whenever the time comes but now i have to really think about what I'm going to do with my front seal.

Yeah, man, it was unfortunate that we didn't have time to get to your job. That's partially on us as we both didn't gauge your wrenching ability correctly. I apologize for being short with you at times yesterday as well. My priority was that clutch, and if it wasn't for that I'd have taken a bit more time to help you and explain things to ya.

Next time we will make sure you have someone to help and teach you.

Yea Steven and Tony helped me with my timing. We did mine with belt off and set timing marks then put on belt but I cant remember how we did it. I do know if you search the interweb you can find out how many teeth are between to two cam gears but thats about all I remember.
