Low budget, Can it be done?

alright so a buddy of mine has a turbo from a turbo II 13b, hes going to give it to me if i want to boost the miata.

$300 ~ give or take a little can it be done with second hand or ebay parts?

im not going to have to pay for any work to be done, im more than capable of doing the work myself.. also the same friend will be helping.

i know i need a manifold, downpipe, intercooler + pipes

built in wastegate on the turbo with a 7lb spring so i wont be needing a boost controller.

ill be running stock ECU for the time being.

will i need larger injectors for the 7lbs? or any other fuel upgrades for it for this low boost?

anything else im forgetting? besides gaskets.

No. If you do manage to get it together you'll regret it. Do it once, do it right. Save your money from the eBay junk and wait til you can get quality parts.

Let me put it this way. A friend and I were having a little competition to see who could get their car done first and who could go faster in the 1/4 mile. He decided to go the eBay route, I bought legit parts. He started a year ahead of me, I had my car together within 2-3 weeks when I finally did start and he was still struggling for reliability a year later. I did 12s in the 1/4 last year, it took him til this year to get to the track and he ran 14s.

Tl; Dr don't cheap out on boost

It can be done but SHOULD it be done? :| If you cheap out now that means that you have the time and money to do it properly later.

If you are a tuning god and have tons of spare parts, yes.

Can it be done? Sure, however not sure how reliable it will be as a daily. If this is a spare car that you can park in the garage and work on you can probably do it and take your time. If this is your daily driver I would just save up and buy either a used turbo system that has all the hardware, parts, etc, or buy one new.

If you have the 1.8L motor you can get a good bolt on system from HKS, Flying Miata, or BEGi

FWIW we had a local guy grab a turbo from a Mitsubishi at the scrap yard and do a custom build like what you are talking about. His car ran really good for about three months and then he blew the motor. (no piggyback computer)

yeah, no spare car. ill end up waiting and take care of other things not car related first.

It can be done for cheap, if you want a ticking time bomb. You have to have good quality parts with the proper fuel delivery to back it up, if you want a setup that will last you a while. You can only save money, if you have tuning knowledge, but you still have to pay for good quality parts. Save up for the FM kit and call it a day.

well, im grabbing a kit from a guy that cant get his miata to run for $250. includes everything but the turbo, its all fairly new stuff.
ill grab the turbo from my buddy, and just wait to put it all in untill i have an ecu and take care of the fuel.

grabbing the kit for $250 is just to good to pass up on though.
log manifold, intercooler, pipes, bov, msd ignition, downpipe, wg. pretty much everything except the turbo..
ill hold off and get the rest and then stick it on after its all ready though.
