    Factory Immobiliser?

    Hey guys

Im just wondering, was the immobiliser on our cars an optional extra? Only reason why I'm asking is because in my NA8, there doesn't seem to be a little red right next to the dimmer dial and the power window controllers. I'm only assuming that that little red light is the factory immobiliser? Mine is just a blank plate?

I found this picture on the internet for reference. Although the picture was taken a bit further back, you can see the light next to the steering column :

Here's what mine looks like :

If there is none, is there a way to install the factory one or would it be better to go aftermarket?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

No factory immobilizers in the US until '01, IIRC.

    Factory Immobiliser?

Mazda Australia factory alarm systems were made by Vision and added in pre delivery. I prefer to replace them with an Immobiliser that meets new Au standards. If you have an uninstalled factory system you want to use, post up a pic. I may have a wiring diagram to suit.
Edit: it was a genuine accessory rather than an option.

EU NA8 had immobilizers. Mine has, and it's a '97. So the blank in yours, is for our cars that had them installed.

Thanks for that Malibu Q! Didn't realise it was considered a "genuine accessory".

Any recommendations on what aftermarket immobiliser would be best?

Immobilizers - or alarms in cars are VERY dependent on the quality of the installation. If you buy the most expensive model in the world & have it installed by a bozo, it will be a disappointment. On the other hand, even a moderately priced unit IF installed competently & by someone who knows the car in question will work very well.
I don't even remember the brand I put in my 1990 NA (think Codealarm?) but I added a radar sensor in the center console & door lock motors to make it keyless entry. I used the blank plate to mount the status LED. Been very pleased with the result.
Love it when I'm parked at the bar & ask my buddies to hand me my sunglasses, then watch what happens when the alarm goes off from them reaching inside the open car!
