    TRAP replica Mazdaspeed hardtop vent

    http://ameblo.jp/trap1993/entry-12142032643.html

Pretty cool. I wouldn't ever cut up an OEM hard top but this would be awesome on an aftermarket hardtop. The one thing I never liked about the original lightweight Mazdaspeed hardtop, besides the insane cost and limited availability, was the rectangular shaped rear window. This TRAP item gives you the best of both worlds.

Original Mazdaspeed lightweight hardtop for reference, available with or without vent.

The cost is extreme for such a small piece of fiberglass.

You're paying for the flappy plastic flapper thing!

This is kinda neat. It can evacuate my cigar smoke while driving with the windows up in the rain!

I hadn't paid attention to that. Looks like 23,500 ($208.49) for fiberglass and 32,500 ($288.34) for carbon fiber. These are more complex to make than a Zoom Engineering headlamp lid (10,584 or $94.24), for example, so I'm not surprised the cost is approximately double. They are also likely to sell much fewer of them, making it more difficult to recoup development costs. It's a niche product with a boutique price.

I can not imagine the nervousness of trying to install this onto a factory hardtop. That said, it's a nice looking piece.

I can't imagine there will be many wanting to cut up their hard top.

Yeah, I'd have to have a LOT of trust in a shop to do that install. Bet it would look killer in white

I don't see many, if any, OEM hardtop users installing this. It's really for lightweight aftermarket hardtops with plastic rear windows, mounting brackets instead of latches, etc.

    TRAP replica Mazdaspeed hardtop vent

Why is anybody worried about adding the vent to a stock ht? It's not like they're rare. If you stuff it up, stick another on, or make a sunroof, lol. No damage to car. It's not like adding flares where the whole shell is stuffed. Thanks for posting freedomgli. Cool find.
Edit: I wonder if it's right hand specific.

I actually really like this product and idea. Like everyone has already mentioned, it'd be hard to cut up a OEM HT to install this. But maybe if I find a cheap beat up HT that needs repairing I would consider it. Another gripe I have with this one is that you can't close the vent from the inside like you can on the Mazdaspeed HT. I don't want spiders and bugs crawling in on me!!!

The standard ms vent is always open, too. It's a good point about the spiders, and one I hadn't considered. Ms item has a mesh fitted though, maybe it'll keep the big fellas out.

Ahhh I would have sworn I saw pictures of the inside and it had some kind of latch, guess not =). Pretty cool idea though, I love it! I may buy one and look for a busted HT.

Looks like you could mount it on either side, install looks simple. Hardest part as others stated is cutting into a hardtop. They are getting expensive and hard to find here.

But I'll probably still buy one. Group buy anyone??

I've seen the Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type RA Spec C roof vent retrofitted to a Miata hardtop. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?
