    Expectations & Reality: 1.6 FM2 2554R WHP

    Here's my setup:

    55K 1991 1.6 w/ 4.3 Torsen from an NB
FM Stage 1 Clutch & Lightweight Flywheel
    FM2 w/ Garrett 2554R
    MS2 PNP
    DW700cc Injectors
    FM2.5 Exhaust & Magnaflow Hi-Flow Cat
OPL Radiator & BEGi Coolant Reroute

Currently at 14.9psi, and the shop is telling me they think I've maxed out the current setup. Before I spill the beans, anyone else running the same hardware, similar boost?

My car dyno'd consistent 95hp at the wheels before we installed the turbo. I know FM claims 230 with the larger 2560 Turbo at 12psi... so... Thoughts? Guesstimates?

    -Matt

I ran the same turbo on a customized config. I made a bit over 240, but I had a lesser computer and 550cc injectors.

I liked the delivery of the 2554 and knew what the limitations were.

This is inline with my "hopes". I was really thinking 220 wouldn't be any trouble. Hint: I'm not at 220, and both of the guesses thus far have been high.

At almost 15psi, with the above setup, i would think you would be well over 200whp...like 220-230whp.

    My guess is 186 rwhp.
I will be interested to see what your torque curve and numbers are.
I am really close to pulling the trigger on going with the GM EcoTec 2.4

Keep us updated, I hope it will be everything you wanted it to be.
It sure is rewarding to have your plan and build come together with a successful result.

I also have a modified head I ran with that.

It's at 202hp, 184 torque. I'm not overly impressed with the numbers, and am questioning if something is "not right" with the install, the tune, or otherwise. Maybe it's just a really conservative tune, or the dyno, but I would think at nearly 15psi that we'd be seeing a fair bit more than 200hp.

Dad picked the car up the other day, since he was going to be in that area anyway (it's 3 hours away for me). I'll drive the car for the first time since install on Saturday, to get it home. We have snow in the forecast for next week, so it will get washed and put up while I work on a few things for the interior over the winter.

Depends of it is whp or not, also depends a lot on the tune (ignition timing for the most part)

At 202whp, I'd honestly think you would be at around 10psi with the parts/specs provided. Maybe at high elevation then i might see those numbers with 15psi....

As a follow-up, I spoke with Jeremy at Flyin' Miata yesterday. He seems to think I could turn the boost down to 12(ish) and still maintain similar power levels, while possibly generating less heat. I guess flow-wise that 2554 is about all wrapped up where we're at.

I'll be picking the car up tomorrow, based on my father's before and after driving impressions, it should be a handful even at 200. My Mazdaspeed was plenty entertaining at 170-something, so I suspect he's right.

I think you may be a little too wrapped up in the numbers, which is understandable. You can see a lot of variations that can manipulate that. I think if look at the bigger picture, with driveline loss, you are still over 125 HP/liter at_the_wheels. That's very good.

I still enjoyed my FI systems around 180 bhp. Above 200 the grip was very different and not as much fun to drive, IMHO.

I agree with Steven, although no first hand experience with a boosted miata...I'd take 200whp any day of the week and not look back. I'm sure it is a blast to drive!!

At 14.9psi, I think you should expect to be buying some new lower-end parts.
