    More M2 Goodness

NA. The first generation Mazda Miata has been a favorite model of mine since 1992. I have owned one since 1994, at which time I purchased my first and only one.

It may be somewhat known here that I like the first generation Mazda performance off shoot branch known as M2 Incorporated and their specially modified production NA roadsters. I already have an M2 1028 styled Roadster Build in the Tech forum here. In that Build threads past, I stated that I have been gathering parts for a 2nd roadster build. The time has come for me to put all of those hoarded parts to some use. I purchased a second Miata, a stock 1996 M edition, earlier this year. It is a bit rough (and dirty), but I now have a deserving dart board to throw all of those M2 parts at from the past five-plus years:

Getting the parts to move forward with this project took patience and some timing. But I have enough of the parts now to put together a hopefully respectable looking example in a LHD form. Why not just get a RHD roadster? In short, I figured - parts. I will be dealing with a 20 plus year old M edition roadster. Parts are readily available for it here in the US. Lower mileage? Yes. Dependability? Questionable. The same exact equation exists if I were to try importing a RHD one. Could it be done? Of course. Would I be happy owning it when it breaks down and I need to try to certain order RHD parts from Mazda or directly from Japan? Not so sure. Hence the 1996 M edition miata.

I picked up a couple of M2 1001 related manuals. One is an owner’s manual (I figure that I should know the shift pattern for an M2 1001 – lol). But seriously, it adds to things that I am doing IMHO.

The other is a M2 1001 parts manual. It has helped me with figuring out somethings. It makes me cringe when I see all of the part numbers and suggested retail prices.
2,200 yen for an OEM M2 1001 nameplate. Ugh.

I have not thought about that. My son suggested Alfred Pennyworth, but I am not sure.

I like your sons suggestion but I'd shorten it to just Pennyworth as I'm sure it will be worth every penny.

I have begun to work on my new (to me) roadster. I decided to do some suspension stuff first. I was trying to decide on what kind of shocks to use on it. I had to consider ride height since I will be having a fiberglass front fascia installed – the thought of damaging it makes my stomach sink. I was considering LE Bilsteins and coils, but they are not adjustable. I decided to use Koni Sport shocks with the stock springs for now. The shocks are adjustable, and with the factory springs I should be able to avoid any front end problems. I am thinking of adding ground control coil overs at a later date, but I will need to see how things go.

I also have a set of lightly used Nielex Pro-Spec NA top hats that I used with the Koni Sports install.

The brakes were addressed at the same time as the shocks, since the pads were on the thin side when I got the roadster. One rotor was found to have some scoring marks to it. Was it salvageable? I am not sure as I decided to add drilled / slotted rotors. I have used them on my other roadster for years now, so I decided to do the same here with ceramic pads. I had to replace both rear calipers; one was frozen, the other was found not to be sliding properly.

I added some LE / R package outer tie rod ends for bump steer issues as well.

    Panasport Pro Rallys Wheels
They add a classic look to the miata. M2 fitted them to their M2 1001 and M2 1002 models, and quite frankly, not too easy to find in the 15” diameter these days.
    The M2 1001 used 15 x 6 with an et45.
I decided a bit wider could not hurt, so I went with 15 x 6.5 et40. Are they on the heavy side? Yes, like 15 lbs., but they are needed for what I am attempting here.
I chose some Yokohama S drive 195/50 15 tires for them.
The set I have looked real ugly when I got them. I do not know what the complete process is for refurbishing wheels, but do I like the end results:

New Panasport center caps. I cannot justify spending 20,000 - 30,000 yen for a used set of original M2 center caps.
Below: Original M2 plastic chrome cap on left, D-Technique repro cap in aluminum on the right.
I would prefer to find a set of the D-Tech caps, but the company is now defunct, and I have never seen a set for auction.

And lastly, McGard spline drive lugs. I have a set in black on my 1028 G7’s. The lugs seat better on the rims and just really compliment the wheels.
