That polished valve cover looks great with the shaved letters. It's so bright it almost looks like chrome plating.

1001 Door Panels
A bit of a challenge here.
Not just putting in door cards and door pulls.
First was sourcing the parts.
I came across someone breaking a 1001 in Japan and was able to pick up all the door components as a lot.
The 1001 and 1002 door pulls are relocated and are shorter than on stock NAs. So of course there are special reinforcement brackets that M2 had made to bolt to the doors and then the door pulls to that I had to source. It took time to find them, as I figured they would make the install less of a hassle, which of course they did. After figuring the correct spot to put the brackets, I drilled holes and then screwed them into place:

The manual window tracks (added them a few months ago) were a bit tight with new bushings, so I added Shin-etsu grease from Honda. The stuff is amazing and makes the windows glide with ease.
I also replaced the plastic door screens with OEM Mazda parts. I used new 3M butyl so they are like original, and will be a painful black sticky mess to remove any time in the future. Yay to originality!!
The originals door cards were in crap condition; weather beaten and cracked / sagging vinyl. The crash pads were so brittle that they cracked under pressure and were replaced.

I had door panels made to spec from proper materials.
It cost a bit to have these made, but they are spot on in look and fitment. After installing the door cards and door handles with a pair of Areodramtics metal door cups, the door pulls finally went on.

The final result. The only thing that was intentionally left off was the 1001 removable door storage bag, which I do not have, and I did not try to hunt down. It is held on by tenax fasteners and I could see it being more of a problem than anything else. I do have the M2 reinforcement bracket and hardware for its addition if I change my mind.

Hahaha. The sticky black mastic is evil. The replacement OEM plastic door sheets are surprisingly affordable. I dont really need vapor barriers anymore since Ive now got forever door panels from primer 3d. But I plan on using them anyways since Ive got them. However, I plan to use a different sealant that is not so messy.
The new door panels look great. Thanks for sharing the step by step. That M2 adapter bracket for the door pulls is so simple but makes sense.

Awesome update JK and congrats. Spectacular attention to detail as always. Never would have guessed that the M2 pulls required a mod to the door hardware but of course, theyre from an M2. I have AD door cups but they have a rough inner metal finish. Are these metal on the surround and this was there different models they offered?
Given theres a set of replica M2 pulls on YJA rn already north of $600 cant imagine what an M2 door baggy thing would go for. (:

Thanks, I am a Type A with OCD, so I try to make things as close as possible to 'from the factory'. My aero cups are the same as yours, I just cleaned the textured section well and painted them satin black to cut down on the bling.
Those door pulls on Yahoo are aftermarket and supposedly heftier than the originals which could break, prob why they are so high in price now. The 1001 'man bag' is just an odd add on to me. The last one I saw at auction (pic above) went for 30K - 40K yen.

Since I worked on the inside of the doors, I figured I would touch on the outsides too.
I took off the bulky power mirrors and added some Runabout types. They are all aluminum and weigh less (5.4 oz less) than the Runabouts. They are not marked M2, or stamped Runabout. So I am unsure of their origin, may be an early form of the Runabouts

Lovely mirrors - the brushed look is best!

could be m2, its just a sticker that says m2 on the OG ones. maybe pitcrew? they made a bullet mirror, not sure if it was aluminum or ss though

Half the weight!! That is pretty significant difference, im still leaning towards M2, they had the badges on the doors under the mirrors on the 1001, and 1002.
