New to the Madaboutmx5s collection is this rather special white roadster. I’ve known about this car since about 2006. It was imported into the UK in late 2005 and I remember the original owner from Scotland posting on the UK MX5 Owners Club talking about its performance and showing photos of it in Japan. Sadly I was more into 17’ wheels on MX5s so it’s heritage and plethora of performance parts sadly escaped my interest at the time!

Move forward to 2009 and the car was in Northern Ireland with a MX5 Specialist (spookily who had a website called Madaboutmx5s). This is where I started to follow the car a little bit more:

    https://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index....y#entry1303504

If you haven’t read the link above your won’t know it was mentioned as an ex-Greddy demo/shop car, which fits with it being something special based on the photos the original owner posted. This plus the fact it’s a genuine white R-Limited where only 106 were made make it a pretty unique and rare example of a MK1 MX5.

Whilst there is no documentation with the car or sadly info from Japan the best evidence and the fact the car has only done circa 34,000 miles and the high spec including a large number of parts from GReddy, Work, Ohin, Wilwood, etc. all back-up it was never a ‘daily’ in Japan and point to what previous owners have said.

In the UK it appears to have only been enthusiast owned and some parts have been removed or added from its time in Japan. For example parts like the Trust GReddy Intercooler, the (when new US $2000) OS Giken clutch that was removed as definitely not designed for road use and changed for a stage 3 competition clutch, the Mazdaspeed speedo cluster with Revlimiter dials as the Mazdaspeed dials were bodged when imported into the UK with a MPH speedo face, the marmite bespoke bonnet for the Garage Vary bonnet, etc, etc.

Before I bought the car it reached the ownership of Russell Hogg who is a known MX5 enthusiast here in the UK. Russell corrected a lot of issues, invested in a lot of improvements to where the car is today. As an example of the work done Russell fitted the stage 3 competition clutch with lightened flywheel, switched the GReddy ECU for a new Link ECU with launch control, the Garage Vary bonnet and bumper, had the Work wheels refurbished, the VX220/Elise seats re-trimmed in maroon red leather, resprayed various body panels, (the list goes on and on...)

It’s safe to say Russell has massively improved the car. Russell was going to use the car to showcase his business (Bonner & Fitz) at car shows and given the GReddy heritage added the up-to-date GReddy decals (but with a small twist as has the logo of his own company listed too).

Performance wise with the Link ECU it made 242 BHP on a safe by a well known mapper here in the UK. Russell stated it could have been pushed to nearer 300 bhp but given the age of the car both he and the mapper decided to air on the side of caution.

The car has the feel and look of something that would be have been seen in Japan back in the day. It’s period JDM look, with parts originally fitted in Japan or added here in the UK are in-keeping with its JDM heritage. Full specification as follows:

Cheers guys. I’ve known of this car for years so bit odd to now own. For me it has the looks and feel of a JDM 90’s modified roadster.

Yeah it’s quite a new wheel. It must have lost the Nardi bits in Japan as when it was imported had an aftermarket momo week fitted.

The R-Limited had 106 built like this for the Japanese market only. I think it works well and surprising Mazda back in the day didn’t build more and offer in more markets.

They are VX220/Elise seats that Russell had trimmed in leather. Professionally done and was approx US$1000 to have done.

Hope you lot stateside are staying safe. Lockdown across the UK but a few recent photos of mine.

I like this photo of my J-Limited:

The GReddy demo Turbo Roadster had the hood down since I got it. I’ve done some minor jobs like fitting a. New Mazda genuine battery, fitting kit and missing boot trim.

As we are in lockdown here in the UK the GReddy roadster was washed and polished for the first time since I got it. Likewise I replaced the standard front registration plate with a stick-on plate that doesn’t offend the lines of the Garage Vary bumper. It’s a legal requirement here for a front registration plate so think this is the best solution.

Likewise it’s interesting to compare how two different set-ups get a Roadster to 250bhp. My silver Tuckin99 FM2 Turbo roadster is circa this and very quick and refined in how it escalates the speed and like a video game (especially at night where the Hayashi lights make you think about the movie Tron). The GReddy with the screamer pipe feels positively violent. Lots of noise, occasion to the increase in power. It’s difficult to tell what is quicker as post serve the same dish a different way. For me the GReddy feels most like the Corns after I supercharged it and the theatre it provides.

Great update and love the front plate. Always reminds me of so many wonderful vintage British sports cars. You might want to consider adding a video walk through of some of your cars in that other thread. I’m sure many would love to see your cars in person as only some have been lucky enough to do.
