    1997 M-Edition

Finally going to start documenting my Miata build log on here. Picked up this 1997 M-Edition back in January after losing my first Miata (96 M-Edition) to a front end collision that bent the frame in October. I was lucky to find my second favorite M-Edition relatively close by and with low miles (68k when I bought it). A two owner car, the previous owner was a young dude who had bought it from the original owner in 2017 I believe. The guy I bought it from didn't put many miles on the car thankfully.

The Miata itself was very clean needing few things in order to get it 100%. Since January, I have been slowly modifying the Miata getting it back on par with my old one. However, with this Miata, I plan to be more meticulous and thoughtful with the mods I make. I've listed what I've already done to the Miata prior to the post and will update it as I go.

    Tentative Long(ish) Term To-Do List:
Upgrade radiator with a Koyorad along with Maruha Radiator Hoses
    Mazdaspeed Rear Shock Tower Brace
    Mazdaspeed Airbox
    Replacement M-Edition Floor Mats
    Coilovers/Watanabe wheels
    Thorough cleaning

    Here's to a great build!

    Exterior
    -Moss Miata Turn Signal Intakes
    Interior
-Nardi Wood Shift Knob (from my previous M-Edition)
-Hard Dog M2 Sport Black Powdercoat W/ Double Diagonal

and congratulations on the best M Edition! Although my opinion might be biased. If you are sticking with the wood accessories then might I suggest a Nardi steering wheel to compliment it.

Looking forward to seeing your progress!

I'm not sure what direction I want to go with the interior yet, but I do like the Nardi wood.

While I wish I could replace the OEM steering wheel, I've never been comfortable with removing the airbag (if the Miata never came with it then it'd be another story...) I've been thinking of perhaps switching it with one of the NB wheels since those are nicer and still maintain the airbag functionality.

Just a probing question but why would it "be another story"? No air bag is no air bag.

Having been in my fair share of automobile accidents(5-6 iirc), unfortunately, I can tell you from that experience that in every case the seat belt is what made the biggest difference. In fact I suffer from chronic back problems and pain from NOT wearing a seatbelt when I was in a car accident when I was 10yrs old. What would have a air bag done in that instance? Absolutely nothing to prevent said injury.

My point is that while I definitely think air bags have there place, they do fail and can even cause worse injury in some cases...which is why children under certain size isn't supposed to sit in the front seat unless the air bag can be turned off. Where as the simple and time proven three point seat belt is irreplaceable in terms of safety.

Not trying to change your mind just bringing out points you may have not considered. Safety is VERY important to me, in fact as long as I have driven I won't allow any one to ride in a vehicle with me unless they are wearing their seatbelt...properly.

In the end when it comes to safety concerns being on "rather safe than sorry" is never a bad idea. Sorry for "the rant" again just sharing ideas I myself considered when deciding to go without a steering wheel w/o a airbag.

In respect to airbags, no NA model in Australia came equipped with airbags.

I don't think the NB airbag works with the NA. Could be wrong. I had a NB wheel in my previous NA. airbag was just a decoration.

I'm not exactly sure about it myself either. I'd have to do more research before I did anything. Still though, it'll be a long time before I get to that part of my interior so I'm not stressing about it
