Looking to replace my starter, looking for suggestions.

I have a 96 miata and it has been doing the infamous multiple clicks with no engine start for a while and when it finally does try to start it turns over very slowly. Is that normal for a starter that is tired?

I hear that the nb starter is a good replacement. What do you guys suggest?

    Thanks!

Just went through this. I upgraded to the nb starter and it’s been working great. Lighter and more torque. Changing the starter out wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d expected given some forum comments. Raise the car good and high so you can work underneath. All the bolts are accessible from underneath with a selection of extensions and a universal. The starter will come out easily if you loosen and pull away the protective plastic undertray.

    Test the battery first.

Remember to disconnect the battery first.

You might check the battery connections, too. I had the click-click-start thing and it turned out to be a loose connection on the negative battery terminal.

The post on the battery was too small. I tightened the connector as much as I could, but I could twist and pull it right off.
