You can unbolt rare original parts from cars, but not paint.

And I really hold a high regard for cars that have been named, well modded, and loved. Regardless of color. Anyone can buy a factory original special/limited edition car. Only some venture to make a car special themselves. And even fewer succeed.

Spot on Jamie, and exactly what I considered when looking for my MX5. To each their own, and no criticism of those that do, but I couldn't undo what Mazda/Mazdaspeed had done on any of the Special Editions to effect my mods.

For this reason, I settled for the clean palette of a base model that I could destroy without feeling too guilty.

Now this I agree with because now owning a MazdaSpeed car I am in fact limited on what I can do. For example I would love to look at different wheels but I already have Mazdaspeed MS01Rs and anything else to me wouldn't fit right because its not a Mazdaspeed part.

Don't mean to make your wallet angry butttttt...

    S-LIMITED around $8000 shipped.

    R2-LIMITED around $8500 shipped.
    https://www.goo-net-exchange.com/use...001/index.html

    M2-1001 around $22,000 shipped.

These are the going prices on those models.

Also there is a fellow B-Spec!!! Will be legal in 2 months. Could get it to the USA for about $10,000. This is also the same website I found my B-Spec on! Has a lot of goodies for the cost but you'd be getting it with some wacky wheels.

That is current prices, remember I started this love of Miatas back with my first one in 1994 and you could not even import such a young car back then.

That is very true! But Roadsters have been going up. I have been stalking that site since I got mine and I got mine for a steal compared to what I have seen on there.

Oh btw, I see the unique editions as a good starting point.

For example, '93LEs/S-Limiteds have great interiors to begin with (obviously all of the red interior editions really). But my oh my, I think we can point to at least a few such cars, on this very forum, that have been elevated above and beyond what Mazda ever envisioned.

Tokyo Limited (Autolink has one for sale); I would move down the list, even though its rare, I'd stick alongside the B2s. When you see them, you don't actually really want them. The R2 I think is based on a late S-Special, so mechanically, that makes it similar to the RS (4.300 final gearing, lightened flywheel). B2 is a specced up M-Package, with pretty awful upholstery, so I'd stick that at the bottom. I think most of the SRs ended up white, bit of a dogs breakfast of an interior...
So many great insights and new info in this post, much appreciated Andy! Any steer on what Autolink is as it doesn't show up on US Google searches .

100%!! My fascination with these models could only be in addition to what I currently have. Being RHD would ultimately be more of a novelty so any on this list would be an occasional car. I've always imagined relaxed cruising in an M2 1002. That said, I've never imagined modding nor naming any of the M2 cars in my dream Roaster garage.

I also frequent Goo-net but hadn't come across this particular car and missed seeing the one you got. Is there a specific MS search or are you just looking at the engine bays of all the used cars?

Like the color cars? Sunkist has been around for a while with its storied history, the yellow metallic was also tracked down and Raspberry was recently picked up by a guy who's loving it his own way (and probably aggravating the m.net crowd). Find myself curious if the blue and greens will ever show up. Unlike the M2's, I wouldn't have a hard time modifying any of those.

I think anything with the factory manual rack ultimately disappoints. My understanding is that the first few 1001s had the manual rack, but buyers complained, so later ones had the speed sensitive quick rack. With the 1002, the standout feature is the stitchwork on the dash. The shocks carried a M2 code. Mine had a very compliant ride. The other thing about M2s that impresses are the invisible parts. When you take the tombstone off, you see the hand saw marks of how the dash was trimmed. The dainty door pulls; they are on hand made steel brackets. So the 1001 and 1002 are basically handmade cars. Not sure about the 1028 though. With all the other special editions, once you start tracking down the VIN sequence, you realise they were just an entry in a computer ledger, with a preplanned run to build up dealer stock/demonstrators, then a gap, then ramping up again to fill demand.

With the M2s, that Just-In-Time mentality seems to not apply. You've only got to see the photos of Mazda's ET&T facility, where they are restoring NA6s, to give a glimpse what it must have looked like, because I think the assembly of these M2 cars was done there.

I dare say, if you got them all together, people would be able to see slight differences between them.

The closest analogy I can think of in recent years is the Mk3 Escort RS Turbos. Those cars, always in white, seemed a bit more special than the regular XR3i, with all the AVO lore (whether they were built in Essex, I'm not sure). But the later Mk4 versions, when suddenly you could get them in black or red, seemed a bit less special.

Bumping this thread, because I see the Autolinkuk Tokyo Limited still hasn't had any takes:
    https://www.autolinkmx5.com/eunos-ro...ck-11858-p.asp

Given the way NA prices have changed recently, suddenly that price doesn't look bad. And seeing this car in the flesh (albeit at the last MX5OC Rally), I know its a good one with a good interior.

BUT, maybe the Tokyo Limited in Japan isn't that highly prized. This one went cheap, and I can't see much wrong with it, except for the "high" mileage

It has been on the site for years and 3+ years ago roadsters were much cheaper. So it makes sense they want to get rid of it at its current price.

Plus its a rare trim so it wouldn't be a bad idea to consider picking it up.
