    Talking SuperMiata Tecna coilovers, finally!

After nearly 10yrs(iirc) in the making, SuperMiata's "budget/daily/comfort" coilovers, Tecna, is finally going to be available soon! From another forum:

    -Xida, around $2500
-Tecna a bit longer than Xida, so optimized for 5" and above pinch weld heights
-Tecna & Xida ride very similar with softest spring rates and Xidas on softest damping setting. That was one main goal for Tecna.
-Tecna lack the stiffer damping range that Xidas can provide. So Tecna great for street and occasional auto-x or HPDE. Tecna are not race shocks nor do we recommend them for anyone seeking maximum performance in a competition environment. That's what Xidas are for.
-Tecna are about the same weight as OEM with springs. Tecna are steel with 2.5" springs, Xida are aluminum with 60mm Swift springs. Xida are way lighter.
-Tecna will have a 10 year warranty, no service required. Xida are 3 year warranty and typically require service every 2-5 years depending on use profile.
-Xida have the widest damping range of any NA/NB shock on the market, by a good margin. Tecna have a much narrower damping adjustment range roughly equivalent to 20-15 clicks on Xida (20-0 clicks).
-Tecnas will only be offered with 6/4kg springs, high rate helpers and our NB mounts, fully assembled. No spring rate or mount options.

These are going to be a 'game changer', IMHO, and looking forward to hearing people's feedback on them. Who here is getting a set? Unfortunately my setup demands Xida Race(or similar spec'd) coilovers, otherwise I'd be all over them.

$1350 seems steep for oem weight/steel body shocks, but who knows, maybe these will be perfectly balanced for fun street use unlike most options and being supermiat should be quality. I recall being able to get meisters for 600usd a set or so, now it's.. double that. that's a whole lot of inflation in the last 6 years.

Sounds like you're talking about the Sportive(currently $695 here) which is non adjustable for one and undoubtedly won't hold its own to the Tecna nor should it as its considered their entry level coilover.

I'd say the majority of people that come on the forums usually has a budget of $1k+/- in mind for coilovers so the price would be a bit of a stretch but so many "enthusiasts" won't think twice about spending twice that on wheels or a "wide body kit" yet think spending that on one of the most important aspects(suspension) of the car isn't necessary which is highly flawed thinking, imo.

SuperMiata said from the beginning(10yrs ago) that the target was around $900-$1k(ATM that was about half the cost of Xida Race) so for the fact that they will be around $1300 a decade after they started the project tells me that they tried to stick to that as closely as possible w/o sacrificing anything where it matters and that still puts them very close to half the cost of Xida Race.

I know MeisterR is well regarded in Europe but you simply can't fairly compare a one piece design shock developed by one of the best miata specific shops in the world specifically designed for the Miata to a two piece design shock made by a run of the mill coilover company.

Xida Race are the best OTS coilover for a reason and that reason is first hand knowledge and experience. Tecna will be no different, imo, but you get what you pay for.

As explained in the video, the reason for the body material was cost, to keep it down. I won't bother to try and explain beyond that because it's all well covered in the video and if it wasn't, as mentioned several other videos will be coming out.

I meant the CRD, the adjustable bottom end ones. the Sportivo came after the CRD, afaict.

otherwise ^ all solid points :-)

I am not sure this is happening. They have teased them again a year (?) ago, but still no ETA as far as I am aware. I am about to pull the trigger on a set of custom-spec ASTs instead

IIRC, they said they will start taking orders next month. I'd email them before ordering the ASTs if your interested in the Tecna's.

We shelved the project late 2013. When we began working on it again in 2019, the targets had changed. From the original degassed, non adjustable twin tube to a high pressure nitrogen charged, internal floating piston, adjustable monotube. 4 years after starting, we have production samples that are what we want. Going into production soon. Check the website for deets.

    The low down
The Tecna coilover was engineered from scratch to be the best riding coilover in this price range and still allow lowered ride heights. We think of these as daily driver shocks, not race shocks. If you are focused on the ultimate handling in a competition type environment, we recommend stepping up to Xidas with much higher spring rates. Tecna damping range is roughly equivalent to the softest 35% of Xida range. Perfect for a daily driver, canyons and some casual HPDE or auto-x. Tecna do not require service and are intended to last the life of your vehicle. Ideally suited to 185-205 width tires above 280 treadwear on 6-8″ wheels. For wider, softer compound tires, look at our Xida options.

    Why one piece body?
Body, shaft lengths, stroke, mounts, and internal configuration are specifically engineered and maximized for this application. They are unlike 2 piece, length adjustable coilovers that use an existing universal short cartridge with an extension adapter to make it fit. The advantage of a one piece shock is full bump and droop travel without needing to choose one or the other. Additionally, a one piece shock is all shock, no hollow adapter that wastes space. That means more oil and nitrogen volume for better pressure balancing and increased shaft stroke. A telling feature is the helper springs (stroke!).
outube video on 1 & 2 piece shocks

    • CNC machined one piece steel bodies and 6061 T-6 aluminum end caps
    • Monotube design
    • Offset rear lower mounts
    • 44mm piston
    • Adjustable ride height
    • 30 position adjustable damping
    • Rubber dust boots
    • High pressure nitrogen charged
    • Euro spec synthetic fluid
    • 120mm long stroke front and rear
    • 6kg/4kg spring rates (336/224 in/lb)
    • Recommended pinch weld height range 4.75- 6″ *
    • Fully assembled with our NB upper mounts (Bolt-in for all 90-05 Miatas)
    • Shipped pre-adjusted and ready to install
    • Spanners included for adjusting ride height
    • 10 year limited warranty

    Set up:
Typical available adjustment ranges are front pinch weld heights between 4.75″ and 6″ with driver. Tecna will give the best combination of handling and ride with stock or a small aftermarket front sway bar. 1″ max front, OEM rear. More sway bar than that will only reduce ride quality without any meaningful increase in grip or handling.

    Front fender liners:
The standard front setup provides enough bump travel for a 205/50/15 tire on a +36 offset 15Χ8 to just barely kiss the fender liner at full bump. Wider tires or lower offset wheels will require removal of plastic inner fender liners in front. If running 245/40/15 tires or touching the front fender liners on big bumps, add our shock mount spacers or travel limiters to create enough space for your oversize tires.
