    DIY powered exhaust cut out

There is a fine line between moron and genius and I'm pretty sure which side this falls on...

The saga starts when I noticed a a 3 1/2" elbow that happened to be sitting on the counter at NAPA.

That sparks an idea. This would be so much better than my 2 1/2 manual cut out that doesn't flow very well.

So I hunt on ebay for at least a 3" throttle body.

Then out comes the welder to put them together.

With a header flange I attach this monster to the side of the muffler. I also put a scoop at the back to direct air down the cut out.

I try to hide it so it won't show.

Now how to make it move I happen to have a control cable laying around so I route it up to the drivers seat.

PROBLEM! The cable control is really hard to pull and won't keep the throttle flap open with the spring in it. When I put less pressure on the spring it won't seal shut. Time for a plan B and where intelligent design kind of fall apart...

I cut apart a Camaro door to get the motor out.

Weld said motor in the trunk with a hunk of cable welded to the gear.

Run the cable through the floor and a pulley to the throttle - er a no the cut out.

Wire it all up the a Camaro power window switch

And voila an electric cut out for 34 bucks. Click HERE to hear how it works.

Spare time and anything can be made from scratch. Liked the idea of using a throttle body for the cut.

That's pretty sweet. Wonder if you can feel any difference when under wide open throttle?

    Haha, freakin love it!

    Thought I recognized that sound...

I have something similar (in concept) on my ride. The two inner tips are pneumatically controlled. It's a factory upgrade to allow the exhaust to roar when you stomp on it but purr like a kitten otherwise. Of course, the aftermarket came up with a switching mechanism so that I can turn that LS rumble on and off at will.

Could you wire up a switch to gas pedal to open up that exhaust at full throttle. I know they make the switch for nitrus setups .

You should make it look like a dual exhaust. Get the same tip as you have for the original exhaust, will be looking complete.

Nope it's spec Miata suspension right out of a race car. Bilsteins with Eibach 700 front and 350 rears.

Thought about that for for some odd reason I kind of like the single exhaust. You know because the rest of the car is so subtle and stock... I probably will when I paint it though.

LOL have you seen this clip?

That was with the old cut out open and about 40 less HP than it has now. The weak point is traction so I'd be surprised if I could feel a difference but it should sound a little better.
