Nb garage vary tail light modifications

So I bought real GV tails, had them painted (they look awesome, I'll post pics) and now I'm having cold feet about cutting up the car to install them because I'm a wuss. I'm thinking that there must be some other light with a smaller depth that could be substituted for the ones that come with the lights and not require cutting at all. I love the look of the lights as-is, but I'd like to do some searching for another solution.

This will be my thread to document my search for alternatives, or to document the modifications I need to make them fit as they are currently configured.

    Suggestions and comments welcome!

Did your GV tail ligts come with Porter cab lights? If so, maybe you should check the alternative rev9 offers to people that can't find porter cab tail lights, and maybe sell them.

Yup they have the porter cab lights I believe. I've been looking into some stuff meant for jeeps, but will have to do some measurements.

What exactly do you have to trim? Please show me, I was thinking of buying garage vary lights for my NB roadster.

I remember reading that these are supposed to fit. No idea if they're any shallower though.

you have to cut to fit them? I thought this was just plug and play? I am also curious now as to what you have to cut.

I think you cut some of the metal behind the tail light area? I'm not sure though.

I'm probably going to sell my set. Doubt I'll ever use them.

I'll pull the stock lights tomorrow and take some photos, there's no way to fit them without cutting

I also thought, that this part is plug and play... ok, lets assume that we would cut the metal behind stock lights, then install GV - is it possible to put the stock lights back after some time (the is no metal behind...) ?

You would be able to reinstall the stock lights but there would be a hole larger than the grommet that the wiring normally goes through

Irreversible mod - This was my biggest pain when installing these tails, but then again, I did slap on some flares.

The stock lights can be reinstalled, but will only held by one nut and a screw.

Ok, first candidates!!! I had the distinct (dis)pleasure of working on a Chevy HHR at work this evening, and I believe that it's tails will work. Diameter is spot on, and they are an inch shorter overall in depth including the studs (which can be trimmed further if need be) They sandwich mount so no further drilling would be needed either. Here are some photos!

To be honest I ilke these Chevy lights a lot more than the GV lights, because of the mounting points and because the factory light bulb should fit without issues. Great find!!
