As much as I intended on keeping it under wraps until it was roadworthy, I just can't do it.

I'm too excited.

I own a Miata again.

Against someone wise's advice, I did not buy a stockety stock perfect base car. While that would be great to start with a fresh slate, for some reason I actually prefer starting with something abused and set aside. Maybe it's a personal relation with my upbringing, and wanting to take something people shove aside or look past and make it something people can't miss. My first Miata did that, but in a flashy, "LOOK AT ME" way. This car will not do that. This car will be more refined. A roadster.

I bought a BRG yesterday. It's not pretty, it needs a lot of love, but it has potential. I initially decided to buy it for the deal, and potential flip value. I didn't want a NA6 chassis, even though I wanted a NA6 dash. But it's growing on me.

So updates today. We were bored, and aren't doing the trans until tomorrow on the car, so we decided to put the wheels on the car to put the daisies on the other BRG.

I had a feeling they would look ridiculously stupid on the car at stock ride height. I was wrong. I mean, they do look dumb. But they also look amazing. I can not wait for my coilovers to come. They've been ordered, but now it's a waiting game.

Today was a good day.

I sold some parts off the parts car, and bought some for the keeper.

I also painted my tach needle yellow so it doesn't get washed out by the white of the moon. It turned out amazing.

http://i.imgur.com/NY87YXUl.jpg

And take into account my crappy camera, but here's the gauges at night. I am in love.

http://i.imgur.com/9rb54s3l.jpg

I may or may not have a matching HVAC panel in the works thanks to Adam.

http://i.imgur.com/xHRl5A4l.jpg

I also had the fenders rolled today. I took it to some guys I know that are well known for their abilities. They started the rears with the roller, but after it wasn't playing along, they decided to go old school. I was a little worried watching them take a metal body hammer to the car, but they did an amazing job, and now I won't have any clearance issues when my coils come in.

Also, after seeing that technosports rear subframe brace for sale, and thinking how interesting it was, oddly enough when I looked under my car, I found out I actually have one.

Oh, and about those parts I bought.

Picked up some brand new Zoom side markers from PhatMiata
http://i.imgur.com/4UESrynl.jpg

And then I bought something else. Little backstory; I've decided that I plan to take a page out of Sharka's book by removing every mention of "Miata" off of this car, and replace it with Roadster. I was looking at KG Works' website at cluster panels when I came across the third brake light covers. I thought they were cool, but couldn't understand why they only made two, one with their logo, and one with Miata. And then two days later, I see another PhatMiata sale, and sure enough, it's a rare discontinued Roadster brake light cover. I immediately claimed it.

actually if you do an LED it would be too bright and you would not be able to make out the word "Roadster"

I would say use the stock bulb or even a slightly lower brightness bulb to get a better effect at night.

If you want to use LED then maybe put them in your outer most taillights instead.

So this odd shaped package showed up at my door.
http://i.imgur.com/ObS07CEl.jpg

Oh look, a Momo. And conveniently placed short hub and quick release.
http://i.imgur.com/iOlNPw0l.jpg

Down to the clockspring.
http://i.imgur.com/3psWlR1l.jpg

So I don't have the before picture, but I removed the brass(?) grounding ring in the back of the hub, in order to not delete the clockspring, and I decided to route the horn wire through the hole of the hub. Poke a small screwdriver or pick through the wheel holes, apply pressure, and it will pop off.
http://i.imgur.com/jJNUkHbl.jpg

Pic of the hub attached with the horn wire coming through. Attach a female blade connector, and attach it to the quick release side that gets bolted down.

http://i.imgur.com/We1UKVzl.jpg

Connected like so.
http://i.imgur.com/tosTbbcl.jpg

Short hub attached. Don't mind the alignment. It's turned all to the right from tightening the hub bolt.
http://i.imgur.com/a8Ywmmdl.jpg

And done! Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the grounding ring and hooking up the horn to work, but the horn does work. Any questions, feel free to ask. When I get my Nardi, I will take pictures.

340 to 350 feels about perfect for Miatas, if you get the smaller stuff it feels like a real Go-Kart :teehee:

Corifto
07-01-2015, 01:04 PM
Yeah, the Nardi is a 330 as well as the Momo. Retailer refused to refund it at first, and after a long talk he decided to offer a refund, but at a 10% restock and refund shipping. So it would've been a $60 hit. I decided to take the gamble that I could resell it at what I paid or close to it.

So today is a great day. And I only woke up 30 minutes ago. I feel like a kid on Christmas Morning. I received two tremendous packages in the mail.

http://i.imgur.com/DDBmP3kl.jpg

The smaller package is from Bill at MiataRoadster. The second is from Adam/Revlimiter. We'll get to it in a minute. Save the best for last, right? Now that's not saying the MR package isn't noteworthy, because it's a great package in itself.

Now, the shifter in the BRG is probably one of the sloppiest shifters I've ever had. 13 cars, 10 manual, and it takes the cake. I knew I needed a MR kit to solve that. Unfortunately, I had missed out on the last Group Buy by a week or two. I messaged Bill to let me know if there were any leftovers once hte shipment came in, but began to look elsewhere, as the shifter was desperately in need of replacing.

Two/three days ago I was at a Mazda dealership visiting a friend and pricing out all of the shifter accessories. I got a text from Bill telling me there was one 5-spd stock height kit left. I paid immediately, and he shipped same day. Amazing service from Bill. And now I can hardly wait to put this on my car and feel the difference it makes.

Now the package from Adam. I felt it deserved a post of its own.

Now since I have got back into Miatas, and started being a regular again, Adam and I have become friends. Great friends. That's saying something, because when I was younger, and was around the first time, Adam actually banned me from CR for a short period of time. I totally deserved it, but I jut think it's a funny little addition to this.

Back when I ordered my gauge set, Adam went crazy and made the Lobo gauges for me. Today's package might even come close to topping receiving that package.

http://i.imgur.com/FGVywCYl.jpg

First up is a black retro window switch. Even I was surprised by the quality and heft of this piece. It's solid, and I can't wait to install it.

http://i.imgur.com/830oRcrl.jpg

Next up is a black hazard switch. I didn't want to take it out of the package and assemble it just yet.

http://i.imgur.com/lyVfC4ul.jpg

The Miata logos on the sill plates aren't terrible, but they're worn. I needed new ones. I was stuck briefly with the decision of which way to go for the new ones. I believe it was Roadster, RX2 and the Type 60. For some reason, Adam slightly nudged me in the RX2 direction, which I was actually leaning towards. But we'll retouch on that a little later.

http://i.imgur.com/ibhg7dvl.jpg

Now with the Lobo gauges, I couldn't stand having a normal HVAC panel, so I commissioned Adam to make something that will tie in with the Lobos. He did what Adam does.

http://i.imgur.com/Eu7CDCQl.jpg

My daily keychain is heavy and bulky. It's got doodads and doohickeys. And a few keys. The Miata deserves better. The Pole Position key deserves much better. I took some inspiration from Adam's SSR keychain and asked if he could make a Big End Rodder keychain. Adam once again did a thing.

http://i.imgur.com/o3cnp5Sl.jpg

Now, this next piece of the package is what makes this package so amazing. Not that the items up to this point were rubbish, but this just takes it higher. While ordering these items, Adam told me he had a gift for the back of my car. He told me it was something I needed, and it once belonged to Scrat. This was huge to me. Although I never mentioned it, two Miatas were my biggest muses both now and back when I was around the first time. Scrat and Sharka. I read and read, lusted over their build quality. When I left the "scene", Scrat wasn't finished. When I came back, Scrat had been sold and parted. Since then I had been trying to find a piece to have for myself, without luck. Hell, I almost bought the GV Trim Rings a few months ago just because.

Now a few emails later, Adam mentioned he had an idea for a small Sharka gift as well. Now that just took me into a full stupor. I was getting pieces of my two favorite cars.

I saved this box for last when it came to opening my package.

http://i.imgur.com/GfABxMSl.jpg

First up is Scrat's badge, that Geoff was never able to use. Geoff sent it back after Scrat was sold, and Adam thought it needed a good home, and surprisingly, he chose my car to be that home. Now I see why Adam was pushing in the RX2 direction for the sill inserts.

http://i.imgur.com/7Dsjnuml.jpg

Next up is one of Sharka's hardtop badges. Adam didn't put them back on when Sharka was repainted. The other is on Sharka's cooling panel. Mine will probably go in the same place.

http://i.imgur.com/6dcrT2cl.jpg

These items are a true treasure. Thank you Adam. They will both find a happy home.

Oh, and Adam threw in a front bumper replacement Mazda sticker. Be looking out for those on the store later on.

Here's a picture of the full package. I can't wait to throw all of this on the car.

So yesterday I went to Harbor Freight. I needed to get jack stands in order to put the parts car on for its final resting place as I strip it. I should not be allowed in HF unattended. I started looking at everything that would help strip a car, and tools I'd need regardless, and left with a $340 bill. Here's my haul.

I also bought a 8pc metric GearWrench reversible set from Advance for half off, $30 well spent.

I figure with all of this and the Craftsman driver/socket sets I already have, the Kobalt drill and impact driver set I've got, I should be prepared to strip this car down.

Yes Adam, eventually I'll be buying the JIS Sharka set. I just can't justify the extra expense with everything else I've bought this last month.

Appreciate it man. I built the old car many years ago. And wanted to do it all over again, the right way. This car has already well surpassed the previous build.

And last night before a meet, I finally sacked up and decided to cut my Pole Position key. I needed a worthy key for the Miata and the keychain Adam made me.

Was nerve-wracking, being told that if the key was messed up, they were not liable since it was one I was bringing in. But I used to make keys at a parts store, so I wasn't too nervous. Until the "new" fancy machine didn't cut the end of the key, just the middle. Thankfully, the old machine I was used to worked and fixed it. And the key actually worked.

I called a few weeks ago to be added to a backup list, as all were spoken for. Then last week I got a call that they had one they could set aside. Few days later, it's in my hands. So I went to install Adam's KG lenses today, and things got interesting. As I was removing the 4 buttonhead screws holding the panel together, I started to fear the very last one was stripping. It did. I then resorted to trying a torx bit shoved in to no avail. I conferred with Adam, and he suggested something that scared the hell out of me.

http://i.imgur.com/4mlWE1Sl.jpg

"Try using a Dremel to cut a slot in it."

I was pretty nervous, as it was a brand new panel, and I have never actually used my dremel except for maybe one time on a wood project. Needless to say, I was terrified.

I took it to the kitchen counter, made sure I had safety glasses, and could sit down and have better control of the Dremel. I set it at full speed, and took it slow, just barely touching the screw. I'd cut for a second or two, then let off and check with a flathead. After the first two tries, I was unsuccessful and began to worry. But in the words of Aaliyah(RIP),

"If at first you don't succeed
Dust yourself off and try it again
You can dust it off and try again"

I tried a third time, and when I put a flathead in I put a lot of pressure on the back and tried to slowly turn it. Miraculously, it turned, and a few seconds later it was out and I could breathe again.

Corifto
07-24-2015, 12:12 AM
So, for those of you looking to install Adam's lenses, if you've got a newer panel, you might run into a few snags. As the writeup on Adam's page shows, the panel is held together by the jeweled indicator lights, which are retained by jam nuts. That's not the case anymore. I did my best to make a writeup.

Supplies:
KG Works Cluster
RevLimiter Lenses
2mm allen/hex key
Gloves
Xacto knife
Super Glue
Hair Dryer
Patience

Cluster and lenses

Begin as usual by removing the four buttonhead screws around the panel. They take a 2mm Allen key. Be careful not to strip them, but if you do, don't worry. It can be fixed, and you can buy the 4 screws for the total price of one dollar.

Once you have the screws out, remove it from the plastic and set the plastic aside. Turn it over and set it on something that won't damage the indicators. I used the bubble wrap that came with the panel. You'll see this before you.
http://i.imgur.com/2uawP2Fl.jpg

The newer panels are held on by plastic retainers that are glued to the panel and jeweled indicators.

An example of the glue
http://i.imgur.com/nbWwnjLl.jpg

Now, the retainers are not threaded at all. They are entirely held on by glue and a small amount of friction depending on the fit. Put your glasses on and get ready to use your Xacto knife.

Carefully put the Xacto knife along the glued sections and slice through the glue. You may scratch the back of the panel, but nobody will know but you. Or in my case anyone who sees these pictures will know mine is.

Beginning to cut the glue.
http://i.imgur.com/lo1L8G2l.jpg

Once you cut through the glue, the indicators should free spin, but they may not be ready to come off. You'll see that the turn signal retainers are much larger than those for the others. We'll get to those in a second, but for now focus on the other smaller ones.

Using your Xacto knife, or a smaller screwdriver if you have one that will work, slowly pry up at different spots of the retainer. It will begin to come up and then off of the indicator, allowing it to slide out of the panel. If your retainers are giving you trouble, you may need to run the knife around the base some more for excess glue.

Retainer removed
http://i.imgur.com/NopdnVKl.jpg

Now, for the larger ones, they may not pry as easily. For these I used a set of channel locks and lightly gripped the outer edges and wiggled back and forth once all the glue was cut. They were hesitant, but after a little work, they too came out.

Larger retainer, showing that they are not threaded.
http://i.imgur.com/HoBR62el.jpg

Panel with all the necessary indicators removed. Don't worry about the 4 in the center, they stay in.
http://i.imgur.com/dtwiDuhl.jpg

Now, the panel may not just come apart, as there is some adhesive and pressure holding it together. When you look at the sides, you'll see what appears to be 3 layers, but only worry about the top one Shown here.
http://i.imgur.com/BssOsU7l.jpg

Slowly work the edges and pull the top of the panel away all around the panel. It will take some work, but will come apart. Just take your time.

Panel separated

Now, once you have it apart, you will see that the lenses are actually held in by glue in various spots.
http://i.imgur.com/E8BCJdvl.jpg

Now you can try to just push the glass out, but I didn't want to take any chances. I went and grabbed a hair dryer. If you don't have a hair dryer handy, find a girlfriend, as they are likely to have one as mine does.

I then applied high heat around the panel in slow circles making sure to cover all the adhesive spots.
http://i.imgur.com/klFJvS3l.jpg

Warning:This will make the panel very hot. I used a paper towel to handle the panel in this stage.

After this step, the glass pops out fairly easily. Hold the panel firmly with one hand, and apply pressure near the glue spots to remove the glass.

Glass removed
http://i.imgur.com/tfxVHN9l.jpg

Now when installing the new lenses, as you remove the protective film, you may see a bit of orange/yellowish residue around the edges. This will not be seen, but if you want to remove it, use the plastic film adhesive side to wipe it away or set it and pull it back. It will come off.

Also, I used the blow dryer again for this step, applying it to the glue areas of each lens before I set them.

Lenses set
http://i.imgur.com/gPEm2tjl.jpg

Now, to begin reassembly. It works best if you push the panel together some, and then one at a time, put the indicators in, and lightly push the retainers on, this way you can set the panel upside down without them falling out. Once it's upside down, remove the retainers, and grab your glue.

I used a Gorilla Glue variant, but any number of products will work.

Set the nozzle of the glue at a diagonal angle along the edge of the indicator until you have enough to work with.
http://i.imgur.com/WpO8riMl.jpg

Put the retainer on, and apply pressure for 10-30 seconds or until you feel it's secure. Repeat for each retainer.

Indicators installed
http://i.imgur.com/pbIIMbll.jpg

Once you're sure they are set, flip it back over and set it on the plastic piece and tighten down. I screwed in a diagonal pattern a bit at a time for each screw, just to be safe. Be careful to not overtighten or risk stripping the screws.

Haha yeah, things are just falling into place and making me spend money.

There was definitely a glare. I tried to take a picture but it didn't turn out. The KG lenses showed a bright white reflection from my kitchen light. The Rev lenses showed a faint blue light. There was quite a difference.

I made sure to only use a dab of glue similar to that of the factory appearance. I didn't use any on the lenses themselves, I just used the dryer to reactivate it.

Appreciate it, but I found out that Ace carries them for a quarter each. The heads are a different shade, so I just replaced all four.

Adam was very instrumental in my saving the panel from the stripped screw, and I mainly did the write up so he'd be able to have pictures of the new process.

Just realized you have a Momo Corse steering wheel too! Except mine is 320mm and i love the size and the grip it provides! So you don't care for the 330mm Momo, as far as size?

As Randy pointed out most say 340-350 is the 'perfect size' wheel for the miata, which is what Adam has told me before. Although i think Adam is currently using a 330mm and think he said he really likes it, iirc. I turn to Adam for steering wheel advice since he is 'wheelxpert'.

I couldn't believe how much heavier my 330mm Momo Corse is vs the 360mm Nardi wood Classico i had! I want another wood steering wheel eventually but a deep corn and probably 340mm. Sorry about cluttering your thread. :fp:

Corifto
07-25-2015, 03:06 AM
Yes, it's a beautiful wheel, but it's too small. My main gripe is it covers the top third or so of my gauge panel.

I had a 330 in my previous Miata, but I've lost weight and can fit a bigger wheel now.

So I will be looking for a vintage Nardi classic wood 340 or 350. Or maybe another Momo.

I must say, I'm not a fan of Deep Corn wheels though.

Uggggghh...that's all I have to say about installing the new GV lights.

Super long day yesterday. Panel and trunk are "on" but not done. The standoff problem is real, went through 5 dremel metal cutting discs. After that, was given an air grinder to finish. Had a disc jump off of the grinder, fly ten feet across the shop to where my panel was sitting and put a small gash in it (which painter says he will fix today.) The 3m outdoor mounting tape I bought didn't want to play along, applied three times and the panel still won't sit flush. At first we could see the tape, so I moved it further back. Then it didn't want to hold. So toda I'm going to try to find some black trim tape. And when we went to install the trunk, we found out the OEM nuts don't work, and he couldn't find the ones that were on the trunk when I dropped it off.

So I gave in for the night, paid someone to take me to my 3,and I'll just go back refreshed today.

For now I guess I'll show you really shitty pics of what it currently looks like.

Was supposed to be at the shop working on it, but the painter spent all night in the ER, so he's getting some sleep and will let me know when I can go over there. I bought some black trim tape this time, 20lbs extreme hold.

The tape I was using was the gray 3m outdoor. I'm hoping the added strength and then the darker tape will work.

I also went through three silicones. First was a "clear" that applies white. Got it on, then read that it takes 7-14 days to clear. So I went back to Lowe's and grabbed a small tube of clear that goes on clear, and then a black tube that needed a caulk gun. I wasn't happy with the clear, so I took it off too and used the black.

I also believe I did the wires differently than some. I was having fitment issues with the fiberglass inserts, so I actually saw a grommet to the left of the license plate wires, poked a hole through it and then ran my wires through.

First I started with Goo-Gone, removed all residue, wiped it down, let it sit for an hour while we took our dog Cefiro to the dog park. Then came back, wiped it again, started polishing with a fresh terry towel, using Mother's polish. Got it to where I was happy, and then wiped clean with another "metal polishing" cloth, waited a few minutes and applied. I found the best way to apply was lining up the length rather than the edges. and very light touches help in pulling it up if you have to readjust.

So, while it may not be for any parts installed, I believe this may be just as, if not more important than any part on the car.

Many weeks ago, Adam told me this car needed a name. I had never thought of naming a car, but the idea grew on me. That led to weeks of wracking my brain. I was thinking of all kinds of things, but none worked for me.

Yesterday, I realized that the name had been there all along. Adam had named it many months before I even bought the car. I believe it was unintentional, but as I looked back at the post, I see it's been there the entire time. And as long as I've owned the car, I've been staring at it the entire time. My gauges.

http://i.imgur.com/6MSfL96l.jpg

Version Lobo as Adam coined it. Odd or not, the wolf was chosen for my gauges due to having deep meaning for me as a "power animal" if you will. So I feel Lobo suits the car very well. It may never be spoken in the same breath as Sharka, Scrat, the Blue Potato, or Rooster, but it is mine.

Sorry for the ramblings of someone just waking up.

Thank you! I love them. Still haven't driven the car with them as the interior is mildly taken apart. Have been awaiting LEDs for my AC panel, and was planning to install my MiataRoadster shifter kit, but I forgot it's in the trunk of the parts car in my storage unit.

As you can see, not only was there no fluid, there was no tip bushing. I can't wait to drive it Wednesday to feel the difference.

I also finished up my Retro HVAC plate and ring from RevLimiter over my custom panel. Also installed LEDs.

Uhoh....

Drove a friend's '13 Mustang GT last night, and realized how madly the Miata needs boost.

I started looking back into the MKTurbo setup, and saw they had just started a group buy. And the kits are made in located in South Carolina, where Monica and I will be in November for a Spartan race. He says he may be able to get mine done by then so I can pick it up and save on shipping. It was fate.

Stunning! Don't know if you've had a chance to be out in the road yet but if so, how is the visibility of the passenger side zoom mirror out of the quarter window/ how is visibility overall with the new mirrors?

Here you go rustrat:
Here are the Zoom mirrors and field of vision w/ the long arm on the passenger side and as you can see no matter where you sit the driver side with the short base has no obstruction.

Thanks RustRat. Sorry I hadn't seen that post but from what I can tell, the driver's mirror on the standard post looks completely visible. The passenger with the longer post looks much better than with the standard post. I've seen M2's and others that are impossible to see (particularly out of the passenger side) and trying to get a sense for how usable the beautiful Zoom units would work in daily life..

Don't thank me, thank Greasemonkey for his pictures. I was wondering the same, and yes, as it seems the extended arm on the passenger's side and the standard arm fro the driver's side looks to be the best option.

The long arm is indeed meant to be on the passenger side, obviously that differs depending on where the steering wheel is located. As far as daily usage i think they are a compromise as is many performance parts, they do have a smaller mirror but are convex and have that anti glare finish that makes for pretty good visibility.

Corifto, i like the mirrors painted but not sure i can bring myself to cover beautiful carbon fiber. :fp: What do you think of the mirrors in terms of visibility?

Congrats on deciding to go turbo and i think the system Lars has come up with is an excellent budget system, can't wait to see it installed. :drinkto:

Sorry I've been absent. Thanks RustRat.

They're great! I put the mirrors on the wrong side, so the driver gives me a headache, but they are awesome. And I'm sure once I switch the mirrors they'll be even better. They're a lot bigger than you'd imagine.

So, I got some products finished that have been in the works.

As some as you may know, the newer GV panels come with standoffs that interfere with the panel, making the install basically impossible without dremeling the inside lower standoff. So I thought of a solution and went with it. I will be installing them tomorrow in hopes of no panel gaps. Randy was nice enough to let me borrow his panels to use as the template.

The seller of this lip wouldn't ship, but I wanted it. So with the help of friends, I have it.

It started in California, where the seller brought it to MRLS. Fwdtamiya did me the huge favor of picking it up, and then took it one step further by taking it to Formula Drift Irwindale. From there it rode in a friend's race trailer back to FL, near Gainesville. Finally, another friend picked it up and brought it to my drift event. And then I brought it home.

Got some stuff in the mail again today.

DDM Works panel for radio and gauges. Ordered this after my attempt to make a panel out of ABS didn't work so well.

http://i.imgur.com/c2wN9JAl.jpg

This had its own issues. Apparently AEM gauges aren't exactly 2 1/16".
This is as far as the gauge would go in, even with a rather large amount of force.

http://i.imgur.com/ABvSamyl.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/f6lI5dbl.jpg

So about 15 minutes with my Dremel, and we got it working.

http://i.imgur.com/IscXr7Sl.jpg

The gauges still need a bit to be set in place, and are somewhat friction fit even though I'll be using the brackets in back.

And I've ordered a new head unit to better match the panel, and replace the tired, archaic JVC that came with the car. Sorry Adam, it's not another JVC.

Corifto
10-30-2015, 12:03 AM
I also got a semi-surprise package from Adam today.

Inside I found two bags.

http://i.imgur.com/6Vbrtcxl.jpg

I was thinking this was a trick or treat scenario, but was pleasantly surprised.

Inside the first bag was a set of RevLimiter Hardtop Security doohickeys.
http://i.imgur.com/6UqX0Fcl.jpg
Sorry for your OCD.

When I got the Miata, I wanted a way to keep my hardtop from walking away and asked Adam about these, but unfortunately they were all gone. But I guess in time that my want for them got Adam to order more, so he sent me some. I believe they should be back in the store soon.

That left us with the Halloween bag. It was definitely a treat.

http://i.imgur.com/0DccVmy.jpg

I definitely enjoy candy, but seeing the hint of bubble wrap in the back interested me. Bubble wrap means protection. But for what....

http://i.imgur.com/15TQwi8l.jpg

Ohhhhhhhh I know what that is.

http://i.imgur.com/cuoxeBJl.jpg

Thanks yet again Adam!

Lobo will be much more enjoyable on drives from here on out. Ten year old CD players w/o aux cords make me unhappy.

Installed the radio today, and it's awesome.

But before one can install a radio, we need a harness.
http://i.imgur.com/aBzguc8l.jpg
70-7901 is the proper Miata harness. On the left is the pioneer harness. How do we get them together? We can rig it with twisting and taping, like the super awesome previous owner of Lobo, or we can do it correctly. Two main options are crimping connectors, or soldering. I chose soldering, since I'd never done it before, but prefer it on radio harnesses. So instead of paying to have it done, why not just try it myself. So we ordered a soldering iron.

Here we are on the kitchen counter with the iron, a set of helping hands, and the harnesses. I did two at a time, with heatshrink over one side of each wire. Matching wires is easy, as long as you're not color blind, and have a basic knowledge of colors.
http://i.imgur.com/OuCOE50l.jpg

Everything all soldered and covered with heatshrink.
http://i.imgur.com/yPnn6xml.jpg

All taped up and neat. Left the remote wire out in case I choose to use it later, and left the ground out to be connected to the factory ground wire.
http://i.imgur.com/6vZumWyl.jpg

Now that we have a harness, we're ready.

Nice work on the GV tails. With instructions in Japanese or non-existent or with old tutorials having dead links and broken pictures it's nice that you've contributed to the community knowledge base. GV tails most definitely need to be sealed up well to keep water from entering the trunk.

p.s love the build so far :P

Lol thanks. Those are really interesting, but I don't know if I love them and want them or not. But maybe. Definitely saving them.

Thank you, I try to give back when I can.

The inner cups are included with the newer GV sets. I only had made the metal piece to replace the front plates.

Junkyard jackpot today.

Saw the local LKQ had a new Miata, figured I'd check. It was pretty stripped down, so I left after grabbing a few things. As I left, I saw a smaller yard and wanted to check it but had to drive a bit before a u-turn. As I turned, I saw another little yard, and decided it couldn't hurt.

Walked in, the guy asked what I was looking for. Told him Miata and Capri, and he asked if I was clever or just lucky, because he had both. He asked what year Miata, told him I didn't care, but the Capri had to be 91-94, and lo and behold, he had a 92.

Found it

Look, some pretty old HotWheels. But what else is in there?

Yep. Bought some fancy fancy. I remember seeing KG TSIs many years ago and thinking they were unattainable, and something I'd never have. But now I do. Not sure how they'll look on Lobo, but we'll find out soon enough.

Nice grab on the Capri cover. I have one in a box here that I paid more for, not too many salvage yards in Maine, and none with a Capri that I've found yet!

What do you plan to do about the vent tube/coil mount issues?

Installed the ECU with some help from a couple of knowledgeable local owners. Started first try but has a misfire. Pretty sure it's the aftermarket injector harnesses, but upgraded versions are already on the way.

Here's some pics.

Roll back the carpet of the pass floorboard and see this metal cover with several 10mm bolts/nuts. Undo them and remove cover.

Car runs a lot better.

So the adapter harnesses for the GT500 injectors had an issue with shorting out, and I think that's partially what happened. I got the replacement updated harnesses and added rail spacers, and as soon as I installed them, the car was running really lean at idle, which tells me that there was definitely a fuel problem. But the misfire was still there.

I think I found my misfire.

http://i.imgur.com/QZ2BsKAl.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/roE0pGel.jpg

3/4 of the bottom pieces fell off and had to be removed from the engine with needlenose. Cyl 3's wire didn't want to come off of the coil, and the connector snapped and was really corroded. With the new wires, and the new injector harnesses and spacers, the car idles a lot better, and no longer has a misfire. It's got a ticking, but I have a sneaking suspicion it's the injectors just being loud 630cc injectors.eing loud

Great work Corey! :drinkto: I'm going to be doing a clutch job in the next month or so, any tips? I think i will pick up a battery powered impact wrench and more extensions as this has been a common recommendation.

I'm sure you will love the FM clutch and 10.3lb flywheel. I drove MC70's '96 Chaste that has a aftermarket clutch and lightweight flywheel, unsure of brand of either or weight, and it felt so much better than stock.

You just running the base map on the megasquirt? If so how is it running and are the afr's good?

Corifto
12-15-2015, 09:16 AM
Thank you! Really, the impact, extensions, and a friend or two make all the difference. We removed the exhaust from the cat back, and didn't pull the PPF all the way either.

The hour drive home was great. Haven't reved hard to see the flywheel in action, but it drives really well.

Started with the Base Map but have been tuning it with VEAL. Drives great. Accel from idle is a little rough, but it's manageable.

I'm alive! Don't worry. Just been busy and recovering from my surgery and trip to Portland. Long update ahead.

Now I don't remember who said it, but within a week of buying the car way back when, someone suggested I get shorty mud guards. Well, sorry for the delay, but now I have some.

So I had been searching for quite a while. I came up short everywhere. Fast forward to my Portland trip two weeks ago, and enter Ken from Garage Star. I went to eat with him and Bo, and mentioned I was looking for some. Lo and behold, Ken mentioned he may have a set, and the kicker was he thought they were already BRG. He did, and they were. And he let me literally steal them from him.

Not perfect, but great nonetheless.

http://i.imgur.com/zc08Bw0l.jpg

These didn't come with hardware, but that's no biggie. I got that covered.

http://i.imgur.com/003xEcNl.jpg

I went to a meet the same night Ken told me that he for sure had them, and a friend was selling a full set with hardware, for another steal. So now I'm set.

Sidenote. I have bought a Zoom Fuel Lid, but am debating whether I want to use it or not.

Very nice find on the mud flaps! :drinkto:

Is your hesitation on using the Zoom fuel lid because of its popularity? This is why I initially went with the Runabout Type II but "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". Ideally I would have liked to have both and swapped out periodically.
