I forgot about this thread until now. Any updates on the gauge glass Adam? Any better luck with the water jet?

I sent an email last week and I now have a test set to pick up this week. I'm really crossing my fingers that the hard water problems are not present.

Tiny update: the test set of KGW glass I got back is good. I covered the glass in vinyl transfer tape and it was able to not get any hard water deposits on the lenses. I've asked to have the rest of the glass cut.

SO. Possibly I'll have some to sell! I hope. And probably I have a set to install in Sharka right meow...

I installed the test lenses in my KGW cluster. They broke immediately. So did my heart.

This project is now on hold. I have to source different material. The anti-glare glass just won't work. I need a polycarbonate or something that won't shatter.

    Really sorry everyone.

Adam, you are a cool cat. The community appreciates what you do. You are taking a chance and trying to do something that no one else has done. You are out there on the edge and we dig that about you (that, and we know it is not in you to produce an inferior product). For what you have done for the community, we owe it to you to be patient and forgiving when things don't work out. We are still with you . . . know it.

Thank you both. The kind words are greatly appreciated.

I'll keep working on this. The unobtainable is the greatest challenge of all.

    Wow, bummer
Seems anti-glare would be a durable as the regular glass.

Just a bump in the road is all. Adam will have the gears in his brain working on it in no time. Well, after the holidays I would imagine, as some things take priority.

a random thought: Does anyone make an anti-glare tempered glass? (Not sure if that would be usable with a water jet though).

I won't be using a water jet for this item in the future. I think the not-smooth edge contributed to the glass cracking. Or rather, CAUSED. I only used it because the owner was eager to cut the glass. They're a great shop and the jet is a great tool, but I don't think it's the thing for this.

not sure if the possibility has been mentioned, but could a film be used on the glass after cutting to not only stabilize it but also to remove glare rather than using anti-glare glass?

A film is good for impact protection (shower door, car side window). But I believe what is needed here is real anti-glare glass that has a vapor deposited coating like Crizal and then it needs to be cut without getting stained. Finally, I think the edges need a bevel to reduce stress risers from the cutting process. Adam, seek out your local optometrist to see how they finish eyeglass lenses after being ground to the correct prescription. Therein lies the answer.
