Adorama is THE BEST place to buy used lenses from. I got my 50/1.2 from them along with about a half dozen others. The 1.2 purchase was memorable because they cancelled my order originally. I saw it for sale and bought it, but my payment was rejected because they found the lens to not be as high a grade as they thought when they were packing it up for me. So they let me buy it at a lower price.

Adorama is great. And $100 is about what they go for. You should check their used lenses before pulling the trigger.

What is the difference between the 50mm and the 35mm 1.8 lens? I found both. I'm happy you recommended this. I've been wanting to get something new for sometime.

Well... a 50 is a 50. And a 35 is a bit wider. On a crop sensor camera, 28-30mm is just about what your eye sees when you look around, not counting any peripheral vision. With a 35mm film camera (or full frame), a 50mm lens gives you this viewpoint. On a crop sensor, 50mm ~= 85mm.

Basically, a 50 is a really good portrait lens. A 28mm is a really good do-everything lens. And a 35mm is as close to 28 as makes no difference.

Do you have a motor drive in your camera? Because all D lenses use that to focus. All the USM and AF-S lenses have a drive built into the lens, so they work with cheaper camera bodies.

Now I don't know what I want, 50mm or a 35mm. I have a D3000. I don't think it has an auto focus in the camera, but with the lens.

    OMG BETTER DEAL

If I'm not mistaken, you would need to get the AF-S lens instead of the AF or you will not be able to use auto-focus.
Also avoid cheap tri-pods. They are cheap for a reason. You will regret it. I wouldn't trust Very light weight and flimsy tripods to hold expensive equipment.

I would get the 50mm. I got mine back when I got my first DSLR, the Canon Digital Rebel XT (which I bought day of release). I have found mine to be a lot more versatile than the 35mm and now if I'm going to be in that range I just throw on my 24-70mm F/2.8L. The 50mm still shines above my L glass at that one focal length. I still find myself throwing it on my 5D all the time to walk the city.

I think I'm gonna grab the 50mm and a tripod. My gf told me not to buy it so I assume this will be a christmas gift!

Just make sure the AF is compatible though like I was saying. You'll be stuck with manual focus if your camera doesn't have an AF motor.

It doesn't have a AF motor, it relies on the lens.

Then DEFINITELY get a lens that has a motor built in. I know I do not enjoy lenses that have AF built in but being stuck in MF, fortunately this is not much of a problem these days in the Canon world.

Yea, you need this instead of the other 50 you were looking at. The down side is it is twice as expenssive.

Unless you really enjoy only having manual focus.
