Like all other hobbies, I know you gotta pay to play, but I'd rather jump in on the cheap, or find a kick-ass deal. I don't mind used gear, if it works well.

I'd like to shoot nature, and be able to do some decent headshot/gathering photos.

What's your budget? I only know Canon but I can point you out to some stuff depending on how much you want to spend.

Ideally, I'd like to get in the door under 3-400, I know the glass is more important than the body, but I don't want to unknowingly buy a hunk of junk with poor quality/specs.

That is the budget for just the body correct? You can definitely buy a decent used crop sensor DSLR body for that price. The t2i, t3i, t4i, sl1, t5i, 60d and 7d all shared the same sensor. The main difference is the convenience factor and autofocus. The more expensive ones have better dials to quickly change settings. That is the order I would rate them worst to best. But any of those in the budget you have will be a good starting point. I've seen used t3i for under $300 and 60d for around $400. I personally use the 60d but haven't had the need to upgrade just yet.

This is Fern Canyon at the Redwoods National Forest in Northern California. Also a site were I yelled at Jeanne to marry me from sheer adrenaline of a 7 mile hike and nerves.

Fun Fact: this is a scene from Jurassic Park III
