Eunos Roadster R-Limited

Some new parts turned up from Japan today. A custom job Nakamae did for me, a steering cowl column cover I purchased new in Japan and then had retrimmed by Nakamae to match the other red interior parts, a pair of black Nakamae seat belt stalk covers like I have in the black roadster for the silver car and lastly some Zoom Engineering side indicators for the white car as have these on both of the other cars and gone off the tinted black indicators on it currently.

The steering column cowl cover is now fitted. Like all Nakamae items it is a nice quality part and one of those finishing touches for the interior.





I still need to get the other new parts fitted to the other 2 cars. On the black car I have booked it in to have a burgundy mohair hood fitted whilst there is also some P700 headlights I have fitting in the stash together with the Maximworks/Mazdaspeed manifold that needs fitted.

Ok I shouldn't have done but I've bought another mx5. It is another MX5 Eunos Roadster R Limited. This will be the 9th R Limited that I have owned and well over 50 plus MK1 MX5's. Regretted selling the one I had in December so I am back again with another.

This one needs some TLC (for starters a decent clean) as I picked it up while working down in Hampshire/Dorset of England and taken the photos before getting it home tonight.

The plus points is its a 1 owner in the UK roadster imported late 2006. its fully complete with the 15' BBS wheels, Nardi bits, red floor mats, Japanese and UK service history and not a rust bucket, bit of faded paint that might come up under a decent mop and sills are showing some minor corrosion but arches are good while the underside still looks pretty good with clean subframes, axles, chassis rails, etc.

It has a after market cat back JDM exhaust system. It has the name on the tip but I do not recognise it. Also has a larger mirror attached to stock mirror but rest is standard.

I fancy having a R Limited back as a stock keeper as it is my favourite limited edition model. I have had a few of the other desirable JDM Eunos Roadsters like the RS Limited, both VR Limited models, S Limited, etc but for me the mica satellite blue is my favourite. Love the exterior colour and interior colour combination while the drive train/torsen LSD combo is same as MK1 RS Limited and has the same 15' light weight BBS wheels so a similar driving experience.

It is a bit mad and I doubt I do much with it for the time being. However maybe it is a little bit of old age and the fact I've got three highly modified mx5s but I fancy a nice stock example.

A few more pieces in the restoration of the r limited came together this week even if they are not yet fitted. Got some new door weather strips (bloody expensive) whilst also met up with Andrew from Autolink (a UK MX5 specialist) and bought the s/r limited re-trimmed red leather seats done to Mazda specification he had. Not yet fitted but the r limited for me is lol about having a decent stock roadster so the new colour matches seats will help with this.

You guys in the States do not suffer this problem as much as we do here in the UK.. rusty sills.

On the recent MK1 Eunos Roadster R Limited I had purchased I knew the sills were showing a little bit of blistering but the rear arches were good. Overall a fairly rust free car. However I want it right so bought replacement sill panels from a firm here in the UK and getting RE Worx already mentioned in this thread to cut out the old rusty metal and replace. Got some photos from them today and good news is the inner inner sills are OK both side, bad news is the little bit of blistering on both the sills was/is worse then either me or RE Worx thought. Not an issue but probably best this job has been tackled now before it could have caused more damage to the car.

Looks like my drivers sill on the 96 if I decided to poke at it hard. But I managed to arrest the decline; once you understand the chemistry. Hot air gun to get the sill hot; softened the paint and drove out the water from the blebs (pin holes appear, which allows water to lift the mastic and accelerate the corrosion process), then shot in a bunch of rust converter, followed by well warmed/thinned waxoyl, through the seatbelt tower. It'll hold till next summer. I'm actually more relaxed about rusting in the sill than the wheel arch lip, which is where it starts; repairs to the lip are more critical cosmetically, and its harder to reproduce the factory spot welds. I had the passenger side done in 2009 as part of the complete respray, but its just starting to bubble now, where the new metal is welded to the old metal. I've learnt now (after 3 restos, and now 4th), before I take a MX5 in for the repaint, to machine back all the paint off suspect areas, so that rusty bits can't just be sprayed over.



I just noticed your silver Roadster has the 96 radio surround headlamp button; you ever got the the night illumination to work? Mine had tape over the bulb holder, and no bulb. Fitting a bulb, I could see the bulb working, but no night illumination. I suspect I need to take the button apart.

Thanks for the info Andy. This R Limited is a late 2006 import from Japan, 1 owner before me. Underside is very clean so the little bit of blistering on the sills I thought wouldn't show as much outer sill damage as that but luckily I'm cutting that all out anyhow. As you have highlighted even buying a 'fresh import' from Japan does not guarantee you a 'rust free sill' roadster and I know from first hand experience a mate who imported a roadster maybe 5 years ago that had early signs of a rusty sill.

On the hazard control switch I fitted that in the corns roadster as felt it goes better with the radio console, etc. Sounds bad but the car has never been driven in the dark since I fitted it so I am unsure if that light is working or not. I have to check it next time I use it.

RE Worx whilst not known in the mx5 world are well respected in the RX7 community. I asked for the photos as provides a proper log of the work done for future reference. Once it has the sills repaired both sides the car is getting both sides resprayed plus front and rear bumpers. I have already had the bonnet and boot lid resprayed in the last month or so by the same bodyshop by the same bodyshop so it will pretty much have had a full respray when done.

Already done is a new red dash board from another r limited (mine had a crack in the top), newly trimmed r limited leather seats to be fitted, a better condition speedo cowl while the hard top now has the side clamps fitted too.

It will have gone a bit over budget and still have a few jobs to do after then but will be a fully complete r limited (even got hold of red tonneau cover for it). I don't think good mk1s especially the decent limited edition models are getting any cheaper over here so in my mind it has been a worthwhile car to restore.
