    Need Help! broken nut screw

    FullSizeRender(1).jpgFullSizeRender(2).jpgFullSizeRender.jpg
    Searching didn't find this issue.

As you can see in the attached pictures I broke off the captured nut in the windshield header. This is where the top receiver bolt goes in.

I must have had it a bit sideways and when I applied more pressure it broke. I can cut the head off with a Dremel, but can't access the inside of the header.

Cold I just cut out a finger sized hole so I can reach in and retrieve the nut, and then use a K-Lock nut and hope I can get it tight?

Get a bolt extractor kit from a local auto parts supplier.

After you get the broken bolt out tap the hole- re-thread it.
Do it right, you won't regret it.

If it is the nut then you are screwed, J/K

get some epoxy gel in a sqeeze tube, and some WD-40

spray your bolt threads with WD-40 so the threads dont bond to the nut.

thread the screw by turning and pulling straight down so it grabs the nut

squirt the epoxy onto the the nut side facing the screw ( I would recommend finding a hex head screw not what you are using now (just temporary to fix this)

let the epoxy gel cure overnight

    then break the screw loose.

if it works then thread in an out a few times to see if it holds.

make sure to use a GEL so that it wont sag or run all over the place and create a big mess.

the other option is to take it to a body shop and have them tack weld that nut back in place.

The nut definitely broke off. I will try to slide a strong magnet in through the sun visor hole to hold the nut and then use a cut of disc to cut of the bolt head. About the only thing I can thing to do to get a nut back int there is so take it to a welder, the problem is getting a nut in there to weld. Might involve some cutting.

Steel clip nut would work but you would need to cut a small gash to insert it.

That would work. Thanks for the suggestion. I have several sizes of those in the shop.

I was able to run a flex shaft magnet through the windshield header to the nut in the interior. I cut the bolt head off and was able to pull the nut through to the interior light mounting hole. I'm going to install a rivnut in the original size and all be good.
