Are you sure you have a 20 amp fuse right now? That's too high. It should be more like 10 amps.

I only used a 7.5 amp fuse on mine only because I didn't have a spare 5 amp available. If you're drawing more than that to power an LED or charge a phone, you're doing something wrong. I ran 14-gauge wire from the battery and that is too small for 20 amps anyway.

Ha, Missed the post about wiring. About the fuse, I assumed it was 20. I know in my truck its 20 and I had to replace it with 25 since I was popping it. I though it might be the same. I never really looked at it yet.

That should be there from the factory (secondary, I still like the original spot). That is really well done and a nice touch with the light! If I could stand to cut up my console I would do that.

    routing from battery to lighter

took me a while to find a wiring route from battery to inside the cabin
For my 2002 NB , don't know if NA or NC is same

    a) disconnect battery

    b) remove the carpeting / padding in trunk on the PASSENGER SIDE

    c) move passenger seat all the way forward and lift up the carpeting on the rear firewall
this reveals a slot about 2 inches long that goes straight into the trunk
easiest way to spot it Open trunk then look from the cabin .... you will easily see the the daylight coming in from the trunk

    d) to run the wire under carpet of the center console ..... used moderately stiff fencing wire to feed under carpet then taped the electrical wire to it
PULLED the elect wire all the way under the carpet without having to remove it

pulled a second wire under the carpet for the GROUND
which I terminated on the bolt that holds the levers gas/trunk release

My radio has a usb port on the back of it. So I ordered this little thing on ebay. It sits more flush than a cigarette lighter plug with a usb socket plugged into it and its same price as the adaptor. I have since moved mine to inside center console when I replaced my dashboard I did not want to drill into it again. Here is a pic of when I had it in my dash.

Excellent how to... Better than most instructables. A note for those with GPS and radar. Power those from the stock lighter for "set and forget" ability. My PT Cruiser had both options and the functionality was excellent. Your GPS will power on/off automagicaly with the car, But this mod will allow your phone or iPoo to charge while the car is shut off (at work etc).
