    CAS Removal on 1.8 NA

    CAS Removal & O-ring replacement.

    There are many ways to remove a (CAS) Crank Angle Sensor. I chose a longer way of removing and installing the CAS , so I can show more detailed pictures. I personally think that this is the easier way of doing the install. It cuts out the part, where you have to kind of manhandle the CAS out the engine bay firewall area once you pull it out of the HEAD.

    What you do is disconnect the black and grey connectors on top of the CAS sensor. There's a 12mm bolt behind the head on the right side of the CAS sensor, remove that and the bracket. There is a long 12mm bolt that is holding the CAS sensor, you can use a (12mm open end wrench) to loosen it. If you don't have a timing gun at the moment, you can CUT or Mark a line on the CAS to get a rough estimate on your timing.

    You can now pull the CAS off the head, but you will soon see that it's like a puzzle to try to remove it out of that area, where it always sits when installed. You have the option to remove the valve cover, removing the valve cover will make things easier to remove and install the CAS sensor.

    I'm not gonna explain the removal of the valve cover, but once you remove the valve cover, you can remove the cap that covers the CAS sensor. Once you remove that, you can now easily remove the whole CAS on one piece. You can see in the picture that there is only one way that the CAS sensor can go back, if you look at the pattern of the key and the slot on the exhaust cam. You can use a needle nose pliers to pull the stale O-ring and cut it off, so you can put a new one from MAZDA. IF YOUR NOT PLANNING TO REMOVE THE VAVLE COVER, MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO GAP BETWEEN THE CAS SENSOR AND HEAD WHEN INSTALLING.

    Picture Below shows that the CAS has a one way key. In other words, fool proof.



    This is a picture of the wrong way to install it.

    Just backtrack to install everything back. After your done putting everything back, now it's time to set the timing.Make sure the engine is warm, with all of the accessories turned off and get a metal paper clip to do the jumper.


    To make this quick, there is a picture below that will show you where to plug the positive connection to power the timing light. You can ground the timing light anywhere on the body. Where I placed the gun is where you are going to peep to check the timing. Once you got the timing to your liking, disconnect everything. EVERY NOTCH FROM THE 10 DEGREE MARK SHOULD GO BY 2.
