OCD engine bay cleaning, and refresh

Doing all sorts of stuff this week on a customers 1994 Miata, just wanted to show some photos.

tearing this engine down and installing some fancy new parts soon

    wow its dirty in here

this last photos shows what happens to your paint if you let that brake master leak and never clean up the fluid, paint is gone, primer is going and rust (cancer) has started

1994. That's the last time these wires saw daylight...well, except for the many spots where the old plastic loom and tape had deteriorated! But alas, I installed new loom and proper 3M Super 33+ electrical tape. The last two pics show a treated coolant hose installed with new spring clips.

Oil leaks that don't get treated are the enemy of vinyl tape and plastic. This section gets new clothes!

Re-Wrapping the electrical lines, most mechanics wont do this unless you pay them extra for it, just my OCD level of workmanship

And look at that nasty old crusty boot! I may have a good one lying around to swap it out with ...need to look for it ..........

    BEFORE

This attention to detail goes mostly unnoticed by the normal Miata customer, but it's standard for me. If you want or need your Miata properly worked on, shoot me a message. I take my sweet time when working on cars, but in the end it's worth it.

    AFTER

will the REAL Oil Pressure Sending unit please stand up !

This is a Retro Fit from an earlier NA6 Miata engine that the owner did so that he gets an actual oil pressure reading vs the dummy reading that the newer NA8 cars have

You need to change out the Oil Pressure Gauge in the gauge cluster as well if you want to attempt this swap. But its well worth it!

This stuff works great on the hoses and helps to extend the life of the rubber.

    looks snazzy now eh?

Lots of work done on the '94 Miata. One more day and I should be finished.

    Dirty injectors?

    BEFORE

    Clean them up!!

    AFTER

    All Clean!

Fuel lines covered with plastic loom and taped in place, just like from the factory.

Taped in place on both ends.

Fuel rail and injectors ready for installation.

    New freeze plug installed.

Well, this is looking pretty good!

    Getting close to completion.

    Another angle.

This was all I could get done on the 1994, and then it started to rain outside, so I had to pack up my work. I can work on some interior stuff for another Miata I'm working on though.

    forgot to update this thread............

So...this customer wanted a header installed. Problem was it didn't come with the proper gasket!
How to make a gasket for a two piece header, with The Toolman:

Start with some normal circular gaskets. Using double-sided tape to hold them in place on one side and a couple more strips used so the gaskets end up transferred to the "make-it-yourself" gasket sheeting for proper cutout.

    mounted to the header.........

    It worked like a charm!!

Score circular lines while gaskets in place and then get to work!

Finished product, trimmed and ready to go.

    It lives and breathes!!

Here is the header installed. The owner says its an older Jackson Racing two-piece, but judging by the quality of the welds and such, I'm pretty sure it's a knock-off, but whatever works right.

New plugs and wires. Fresh oil and filter. Fresh coolant.

Customer's Miata undertray is cracked and broken off in places.

So I dug out this old dirty spare one which I will clean up for him.

Now before anyone says I'm absolutely nuts for cleaning the undertray, a clean one will show new leaks a lot easier! Let's hope there are none!! And besides...it adds 10hp!!

    good as new!!!

'94 Miata is finally done and has been picked up by its owner! So I'm treating myself and my parents to dinner.

Up next is a 1991 British Racing Green that needs some restoration love............... But Ill start a new thread for that one.

What are you using to clean the VC, IM, and Thermostat Housing...why put in a new freeze plug, cleaner for injectors??? Would like some tips as this would be a great DIY for not only myself, but surely others on here...

    Thanks!!!
