    My 97M refresh & upgrade

This is my first miata I bought back in June of 15. I bought it with about 203K on it and after driving it for the summer I noticed it started to burn oil. I had to garage it early August due to moving away from home for an internship, but now that i'm back home its time to do some work on it. my plans are to pull the engine out and replace all the gaskets, maybe new piston rings if needed, maybe getting some head work done? And installing a new cold side intake. Some cosmetic stuff like a GV replica lip, a wire tuck, and an NRG steering wheel I just installed.

you can tell I don't have much garage space, so this should be interesting.

now i'm starting to take the engine out, not pictured: harness disconnected, radiator out, pretty much all that is left is disconnecting the heater core lines, take out the bell housing bolts and undo the engine mounts.

Engine refresh should be fun! It just stinks being out of a miata. Keep us updated!

Hey mate. Took the liberty of adding the IMG tags to make it easier to see the photos

add the tags [IMG] before the image URL and [/IMG] at the end of the URL to make the pics show up in the post

It's been a few days, but I got the engine out and the head off, next up is checking out the piston rings and making sure they're looking alright. To do so i'm having some trouble figuring out how to get the oil pan off. Meanwhile it looks like I could use a new clutch kit as well as a timing belt & water pump while i'm at it.

Again, I'ts been a while. But now that i'm back in school I have free time out of the garage again. After I got the head off I brought it to a machine shop to have it cleaned an checked out. As it turns out my main oil leak was due to some burnt up valves. I had them rebuild my head with some new stem seals and a few new valves, But looking at the side by side pictures of the head i'm noticing just how much was shaved off the bottom of the head and i'm a little worried that too much was shaved off.

During the time the head was in the shop I checked out the pistons and the crank bearings and there was no scoring and the cross hatching was still visible on the piston walls so i'n not too worried about the piston rings causing any problems. I put mostly everything back together and received a new OEM clutch kit ready to go in but unfortunately had to leave it behind to return to school.

Nice work! It sucks when you're busy with school/ Internship. I'm in the same boat, but luckily this is my last semester. I have a bunch of parts that I need to install as well, but can't due to lack of time. Keep us posted!
