I've been having a lot of excess fuel tank pressure and some gas fumes after a hard drive. I wrote a huge blog post about my research tracking down some of the causes. What follows here is the cliff notes.
I bought this little guy to help keep the gas tank cooler. A Thermotec 3' shield. It was recommended by V8 conversion guys who were having to fill up every 100 miles or so to keep fumes under control.
This is the problem. The bottom of the tank is inches away from the exhaust. Like 2" of clearance. You can see some burned up stuff on the pipe. That was a test run of some weaker insulation. It seemed to help, so I bought the Thermotec blanket.
I was impressed when I unrolled it. I didn't expect anything like this.
Nice stitching, nice fasteners, and a ton of huge hose clamps.
You just lay it on the pipe...
... add hose clamps...
... and tighten them down. Nothing to it.
The 3' shield almost covers the whole midpipe. It goes from the cat to the muffler and provides a bit of shielding even to the diff. It's gotta help.
I also got into the top of the gas tank and cleaned out the valves.
This is a pain in the ass with a soft top installed, but oh so easy with the bikini top.
The little check valve is held in with hose clamps. The rollover valve has 4 screws.
Both of them got a little carb cleaner. Both should rattle when you shake them. My rollover valve worked. My check valve was borked. I could blow through both directions and there was no rattle. And after my cleaning, it started to work again.
Bonus tip! These little guys are vastly superior to the multi-toothed carpet pins that hold the package tray carpet in place. I swapped them out for these a few years ago. They're the same sort of pin that holds the carpet to the back wall of the trunk and the plastic panels onto the seatbelt towers. I salvaged all of these sorts of things from my dead 97. Well worth the time it took.
Super jealous about the fun run you guys did. You are lucky to live where you do.

Beautiful work, I always enjoy your attention to detail. It reminds me there's about a million little things I need to do on my Subaru, Miata and Jeep at the moment, none of which I am super motivated to do haha. Driving cars has always been the really fun part for me, working on them is just what gives me the pride when I drive it.

hippari: my mind is so blown right now.
excellent, as usual

Dumb question...you think that your interior temps would be reduced by that clamp-on heat shield?

Though Adam would probably know a bit better.
Question, though.... why not just use exhaust wrap? Or was this shield easier on the wallet?

This! That's why I did this little shield. A roll of black exhaust wrap (designed to resist moisture as much as possible) is about the same cost as this 3' shield.
And yeah, Bryan, I think this would be pretty awesome over the downpipe to keep footwell temps at bay. A 2' shield might be a better fit.
Adam, this is the first time IVe seen your NA and its just fantastic. Love it.

Thanks!!! Yeah, I've not posted much on m.net for a long while... I made a thread a short time after buying my 95 (2008) and it got flamed a lot. Can't remember exactly what. Anyways, I never posted much there after that.
Dont feel too bad, though Im sorry to hear of your experience. IF you notice, a lot of us have abandoned ship and found our way over here. Im one of the longest standing members over there myself with well over 7 years in and over 20,000 posts and I too left over a month ago, without any infractions or banning, of my own choice. I met some fantastic folks over there who I maintain contact with but Gary is more interested in allowing flaming and trolling than in maintaining a quality forum and too many people are unwilling to tolerate it anymore.
