Is it a cover of some sort? Rubberized coating?

It looks and feels like straight plastic up close.
That gauge hood is what Mazda now sells, they don't sell them in gloss black anymore.
Apparently this is to reduce glare that the glossy hood reflected onto the windscreen.
Weird. Not even texture on that.

This doesn't quite fit the spirit of the thread but I thought I'd share this little project...
Poor man's gauge rings... brass bezel with acrylic 'glass' inserts (hand formed the acrylic, wanted to shoot myself) total cost less than $15ish. Also 45mm prosport gauges in cluster.
Prosport is kinda meh quality but they are the only company who makes illuminated 45mm gauges afaik.
I was sure, but i was wrong. there are 2 different hoods. one for the black interior cars that is glossy and one for the tan and red interiors that is the matte finish, at least according to a few old m.net threads.
Thanks for the clarification. Learn something new every time.
Fogbow, still counts. Looks cool.

I have and RS panel coming this week from a member here, should pop the yellow a bit more...
K.G. works panel with some very old school AWD gauge face, anyone know if I can fix that little wrinkle on my tach with some heat(blow dryer?)?

My car came with these gauges. I'll be switching to white faces soon to match my boost and A/F gauges. I'm thinking of going with the Flyin' Miata faces but I have different gears in my rearend so I might get a recalibrated speedo from RevLimiter.
