Is it a cover of some sort? Rubberized coating?

It looks and feels like straight plastic up close.

Yes, but they leave some glue residue that's almost impossible to remove without damaging the plastic face.

That gauge hood is what Mazda now sells, they don't sell them in gloss black anymore.

Apparently this is to reduce glare that the glossy hood reflected onto the windscreen.

Are you sure? I bought a brand new unpainted hood from Mazda last fall.

Thanks! It's still a work in progress but it's coming along. That's actually a ScanGaugeII. I would really like to switch to some sort of MegaView display going on though once I finally make the switch to letting the MS1 start running the show.

This doesn't quite fit the spirit of the thread but I thought I'd share this little project...

Poor man's gauge rings... brass bezel with acrylic 'glass' inserts (hand formed the acrylic, wanted to shoot myself) total cost less than $15ish. Also 45mm prosport gauges in cluster.
Prosport is kinda meh quality but they are the only company who makes illuminated 45mm gauges afaik.

I was sure, but i was wrong. there are 2 different hoods. one for the black interior cars that is glossy and one for the tan and red interiors that is the matte finish, at least according to a few old m.net threads.

That's correct. And if you pay attention to the M2-specials, the M2-1028 used the painted matte hood despite it having a black interior.

K.G. works panel with some very old school AWD gauge face, anyone know if I can fix that little wrinkle on my tach with some heat(blow dryer?)?

My car came with these gauges. I'll be switching to white faces soon to match my boost and A/F gauges. I'm thinking of going with the Flyin' Miata faces but I have different gears in my rearend so I might get a recalibrated speedo from RevLimiter.
